Homework is an integral part of learning and teaching. Homework in Heriot Primary is given for various reasons:
- to provide the child with practice on tasks begun in class
- to encourage independent learning / study skills development
- to provide the opportunity for parents to share in children’s learning
- to promote partnership between home and school
Homework can take many forms and will reflect the age, stage and area of learning currently being undertaken by your child. It will be issued on a regular basis and will be varied, meaningful and interesting.
Many parents ask us how they can best help to support their child’s work at school. We find:
- Encouragement and being positive about homework has a positive impact
- Being involved on a regular basis with your child’s homework is very helpful
- Parents giving their time listening to reading, checking written work and commenting on talking assignments has a very positive impact on the pupils
Homework will reflect the work programme for your child and it will take a variety of forms. On occasion homework could be in the form of talking activities and at other times written assignments will be given.
In P1, P2 and P3 homework should take no longer than 15 minutes per night with this time extending to a maximum of 30 minutes in the older classes.
Homework will normally be given 4 nights per week, Monday to Thursday. The exception to this will be reading homework which some children are asked to prepare 5 nights per week.
Leaflets are sent home at the start of each session to let parents know about homework tasks at each stage, as well as giving parents advice to help them support their children.
Children in classes from P5-P7 have homework diaries and younger children use reading markers to give parents more information about specific homework tasks.
Heriot Primary School has a homework policy based on Renfrewshire Council’s policy and guidance. You can request a copy of this policy from the school office.
