P5H Homework and Reminders – w/b 27.2.17

Good afternoon everyone, I hope you are having a lovely weekend. I have had a look at the photographs Mrs. O’Neill posted of your trout biology task, you all look as if you put a lot of effort into them. It also looks as if you had a successful trout release on Thursday, I was so disappointed to miss it. Please continue reading for your homework and reminders.

Spelling: Please complete lists al, au, aw  or el,il in your spelling homework jotter for Thursday. Please continue to write out your spelling words 3 times using SaCaWaC in the same way as we do in class. You should then write a sentence for each of your first 6 spelling words. You have been trying very hard to include ambitious vocabulary in your sentences and I have been impressed by many of the words you have used. Please continue to do this. This week we will be concentrating on the C of VCOP – connectives. You should include at least one connective in each sentence. Try to choose something more interesting than and or but. I will be focusing on assessing your connectives, however I will still be looking for fantastic vocabulary too.

Reading: We are continuing with our novel study – Danny the Champion of the World. Please remember if you do not complete the reading you will be unable to take part in the class lesson. Please remember your homework was to  read chapters 16, 17 and 18 for Wednesday 8th March.

If there are any words that you don’t understand please take a note of them in your Book Detectives jotter (remembering the page number) and, if possible, use a dictionary to find out their meaning . We will start our lesson by discussing them in class.

Personal Reading Challenge: You now only have 5 weeks of reading left to complete your challenge. I am delighted to see so many of you continuing to fill in your Personal Reading Passports. Remember to choose your books carefully to ensure they are at the correct level for you – not too easy or too hard. You can bring your book into school as this will allow you to read it during our ERIC time.

Listening & Talking: You will be presenting your solo talk to the class on Tuesday. Please click here to see the task sheet with all of the details required. If you have any resources that need to be used on the computer please bring them in on Monday so we can check that they will work.

Maths:  Mrs O’Neill has posted another set of worded problems on your maths homework blog.  Please complete these in  your maths homework jotter. As always, please read each question carefully. You should ensure you are showing workings AND giving a full sentence answer. This homework is due for Thursday.

A high standard of work is being produced from the majority of you. Well done, keep it up!

Both group 1 and group 2 can find their maths homework here:

Good afternoon everyone! It’s that time of the week again. Please keep reading for  a rundown of your homework and reminders for this week.

Spelling:  Units 28 and 35 should be completed for Friday. As always, each word should be written out three times and an uplevelled sentence should be written for each spelling rule word. Please remember to consider your VCOP in each sentence. This week we will be focusing on using more ambitious vocabulary in each sentence again. Please ensure you are including more ambitious vocabulary in your sentences.

Reading:  Last week you chose a new core reader for reading at home. Please complete the book for Thursday 2nd March. There will be no written homework for this as all tasks will be completed in class. As always, if there is any vocabulary you are unsure of, please take a note of it and we will discuss it in class on Thursday.

Personal Reading Challenge: We now have 5 weeks of reading left. You have set yourself a personal target based on the number of books read last term and the aim is to reach it (or beat it!) before the end of term. Please remember to bring your book to school as this will allow you to read it during our ERIC sessions.

Please remember to record the books in your reading passport as you finish them. The passport is kept in class.

Listening & Talking: This week you have a solo presentation to present. On Tuesday you will be presenting your presentation to the class. Please click here to see the task sheet with all of the details required. If you require a paper copy of the task sheet, please ask.

All PowerPoints should now have been sent to me to check that they will open on the class computer.

Maths: Please complete the word problems for your group by Friday. I have linked some of the questions to our Fractions topic therefore you should think carefully as to which operation would be best used in these calculations.  All workings should be shown and a sentence answer should be given for each question. Please use the links below to access your questions.

Please keep up the high standard of work.

P5H – The Biology of the Brown Trout

Image result for brown trout

Yesterday we looked at the biology of the brown trout. We learned about all of the different parts on a trout’s body. They have quite a few fins. Can you remember the names of any? Each fin is used for a different reason.  Can you remember why they have them?

To help remember the different parts we are making 3D brown trout. Each fish will then be labelled showing all of the different parts. First of all you had to draw the outline of a trout and then paint on all of the different markings found on their bodies. The trickiest part was painting on the correct side for some of you!

The fish are looking fantastic and next week you will get the chance to complete them and show them off on your wall spaces.  Well done P5H, it was lovely working with you.

Here are a few photographs of you hard at work.

P7 – Kingswood Residential Trip

We would be delighted if you could attend and look forward to seeing you there. Please write a note in your child’s diary or post a comment on the Blog if you are able to attend.

Yours sincerely,

Catherine Davidson, Depute Head Teacher

P5 – Fish Release

This afternoon we braved the cold as we set out to take our fish on the next part of their journey. We released them in a small burn behind the golf course. This will allow them to grow a little more before they find their way to the River Clyde.

Having the fish in class has been a wonderful experience and I have to say just how well you all looked after them. Out of the 200 eggs we received, we managed to keep a whopping 184 alive! That is just fantastic and Lesley, our scientist, was absolutely delighted. Well done Primary 5!

Thank you to our parent helpers who came along with us today. Here are a few photographs from this afternoon.

Fairyland Characters

In our writing lesson today we talked about Fairyland characters.  We sorted characters into goodies and baddies.  We thought of words to describe them.  What great ideas !

Goodies                                                    Baddies

nice        kind                                                rude           bad

helpful      friendly                                    ugly             horrible

brave          polite                                        scary

Douglas the dragon loved your descriptions.

Dates for your diary

On World Book Day, Thursday 2nd March, we would like to invite any mums, dads, grans or granddads who would like to read a favourite story to their child’s class to pop in between 9.00 and 9.30.

The children would love their class to hear a story from someone in their family.

On Friday 17th March, we will be having an Open Afternoon to show what we have been learning during our Fairyland topic.  You are invited to come to your child’s class between 2.00 and 3.00.  We would ask that there is only 1 adult for each child please. Invitations to follow.

Thank you.

P5S – Marine Life Magazines

Image result for brown trout

Learning Outcome: I can research the marine life found within, and around, the River Clyde. I can use my notes to help my group create an interesting and detailed magazine.

By considering the type of text I am creating, I can select ideas and relevant information, organise these in an appropriate way for my purpose and use suitable vocabulary for my audience. LIT 2-26a

I am learning to use language and style in a way which engages and/or influences my reader. ENG 2-27a

We have been very busy recently working on our topic tasks. We have just completed our marine life task where we looked at the different types of fish/animals found in and around the River Clyde. Using our research we created a group magazine to show what we had learned.

The magazines will be on display at our Parents’ Evenings next month but I will give you a wee sneak peak at the front covers today. You are in for a treat. They look fabulous!

Well, what a wonderful afternoon we had! I am incredibly proud of the way you all conducted yourselves today. You entertained our guests so well and it was just lovely to see and hear all the chatting and laughing going on. Well done each and every one of you! You were a credit to our school this afternoon.

Please click here to have a wee nosey at the photographs from this afternoon.

Roots and Wings Community Cafe

What a wonderful afternoon we had! Today P5S had the pleasure of hosting the second Roots and Wings Community Cafe and I have to say what a great experience it was. We had a little sing-a-long, completed a quiz, played some boards games, did a little reading and showed off some of our topic work. Very busy but so much fun!

Thank you to all of our visitors for coming along and a huge thank you to our parent helpers who were there to serve our refreshments. Another thank you to our House Captains who were, once again, a wonderful help. Our final thank you must go to Miss Burnett who put all of this in place and invited us to host today’s event.

Here are a few photographs from this afternoon.
