On Tuesday a fantastic group of children from Primary 4 to Primary 7 represented Barsail at the Renfrewshire Burns Competition.

Nurture Bear arrives at Barsail
Barsail is one of Renfrewshire’s Nurture schools and they have gifted us a Nurture bear. The bear in the chair will be visiting the classes over the next few weeks, arriving on the teachers chair, hoping the children will think of a good name for him/her.

Our fantastic Barsail achievers this week.
Jenna, one of our amazing achievers played one of her Grade 1 piano pieces to the P4-7 assembly.
Nursery Children Tour and Play at Barsail
The House Captains and Vice- Captains did an amazing job being tour guides and playing with some nursery children this afternoon.
P5, P5/4 and P4 Visit from The Antonine Roman Guard
The Antonine Roman Guard really brought the topic to life over the past couple of days for P5 , P5/4 and P4.
Sumdog Champs
A massive well done to P5 for coming in 1st in the Renfrewshire Sumdog Maths Contest. Of the 144 classes entered Barsail had 3 in the top ten. P5 were 1st, P4 were 3rd and P5/4 were 7th!!
We also had the highest achieving pupil who scored an amazing 981 correct out of 1000 questions.Five Barsail pupils’ made the top ten out of 2,145 children across Renfrewshire. What a great achievement!!

A big thank you to our fantastic House Captains and Vice Captains who showed great leadership and maturity as they supported staff at Parents’ Evening this week. The children received many positive comments from parents’ and staff on their organisational skills and lovely manners.
Chess Club Success
On Saturday the 9th of November Barsail played in the Glasgow ‘ Dragon’ League Chess tournament. The boys had 4 match wins and only lost 1. Amazing job boys !!!

We would like to say a fond farewell to an amazing Primary 7 year group as they continue on their journey to Park Mains and to Boclair Academy. An emotional assembly performed by P7 for parents and for P1-6. We have celebrated your successful year as Big Buddies, panto stars, House Captains and Vice Captains, as league winning footballers, with Burns recital achievements and a medal winning chess player to name a few! You should be very proud of the children you have become. Always remember to Dream Big, Aim High and Achieve More!!

Application for Free School Meals and Clothing Grants
Applications for free school meals and clothing grants are now open. By applying for either or both provisions now parents can ensure everything is in place ahead of the new school year.
Parents must make sure their application is received by the council no later than Friday 12 July to guarantee payment of clothing grants before the schools go back or to have free school meals from the start of term.
Those parents who have previously applied for free school meals and clothing grants will be sent a letter to their home address. If there has been no change in your family circumstances that affect any benefits you may receive, you can complete and sign the declaration form and return it to the council.
If there has been a change in your family circumstances or if you are applying for the first time, visit www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/freeschoolmealsandclothinggrants to complete an application form. You will also be able to read about eligibility for free school meals and school clothing grants as well as what information you need to include with your form.

Fair Trade Pupil Group
Well done to our fantastic Fairtrade Pupil group. The group presented at assembly last week and did a super job of promoting Fairtrade Fortnight over the last two weeks with Mrs Boyd.

Renfrewshire Sumdog Contest
Renfrewshire Sumdog Contest – 8th to 14th March
Barsail has been entered into the Renfrewshire Sumdog Contest which runs from 8am on Friday 8th March until 8pm on Thursday 14th March
To take part, simply play Sumdog’s maths games. If you do not have your Sumdog Username and Password, please ask your teacher. Scores are based on accuracy, and questions tailored to your level – so everyone has a fair chance.
To make contests fair every pupil is limited to 1000 questions. However, it’s fun to take part even if students only answer a few questions.
The motivation is to climb the leader board and beat all other participating schools within Renfrewshire. You can also win rewards for your Sumdog account.
The Big Pedal 2019
This year Barsail has signed up to do the Big Pedal again.
The JRSO pupil group told the children at assembly today. The Big Pedal is from 25th March until the 5th April 2019. Children and staff will be encouraged to cycle or scooter to school from March the 25th.

World Thinking Day
Several of our pupils wore their Rainbows , Brownies, Guides, Cubs and Beavers uniforms to school on Friday to mark World Thinking Day.
Social Night
Come along, bring your friends and dance the night away at Barsail Parent Council’s Social Night on Friday 8th March, 7-11.30pm at Bargarran Community Centre.
Live Music from Jen & Colin McKeeman (including live singing and DJ), raffle, games and cheap bar run by the Parent Council. Over 18s only.
The Parent Council can also offer free lifts home after the event!

World Book Day 7th March 2019
Thursday 7th of March is World Book Day.
The Literacy Leaders Pupil Group would like the children to dress up as their favourite book character. The best-dressed character in each class will get a certificate.
During this week the children will all have special book related homework that the Literacy Leaders group have planned. This homework should be brought into school by Friday the 8th of March to be entered into a raffle to win a £5 book voucher.
The whole school will receive a £1 book token from National Book Tokens on World Book Day.
Barsail Football Team
A football team of Primary 6 and Primary 7 pupils played against Langbank Primary today.
The team won, with a fantastic score of 8-2.
Trim Trail Repair
Sportsafe fixed our broken Trim Trail today. A massive thank you to the Parent Council who are paying for the repair to get completed.
Primary 2 interviewed the Sportsafe workers and asked lots of questions about the repairs. The children were excited to know that when the weather is better the Barsail children will be able to get on the Trim Trail again.
World Thinking Day – Friday 22nd February
Every year, on the 22nd of February, the Girl Guides and Scouts celebrate World Thinking Day. Barsail Primary School are once again delighted to support this. Any pupil who is a member of one of these organisations is welcome to wear their appropriate uniform on this day

Barsail and the Big Pedal
Barsail are taking part in the Big Pedal and would like to encourage the children to scoot or cycle to school until Thursday the 3rd of May.
The children can bring their scooters or bikes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. They can be chained up on one of the bike racks. There is a bike rack outside the P2 classroom and another two outside the P7 classroom.
P6 have cycling proficiency on a Wednesday so we would not advise the children to bring scooters or bikes on a Wednesday.
The children should wear a helmet and dismount once they have entered the school playground.

Barsail Renfrewshire Burns Competition Success .
Congratulations to all the P4 to P7 pupils who took part in the Renfrewshire Burns Competition today.
The children won Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for Burns poetry recital and instrumental pieces on the piano and guitar.
We are really proud of all of our Barsail Burns stars who represented the school brilliantly.

We have worked hard in our Pupil group this morning and have calculated that Primary 5/4 have won the Golden Shoe !
School Paths
You may have noticed that the path beside Barsail has been flooded. The janitor has reported it to the council and they are going to clear the drains in that area. A small piece of fencing will be removed temporarily to allow this to happen. The fence will be replaced and the gate repaired in this part of the playground.

Barsail has got Scottish Talent
Wow, lots of talented Barsail pupils auditioned for the upcoming Scottish performance. The standard was very high and we were really impressed with the children’s enthusiasm.
Unfortunately not all of the children will be able to perform their acts on the day but they should all be very proud of themselves for giving great performances.
All the successful performers will find out next week at assembly.
With all this amazing Barsail talent and class acts, the Scottish performance will be braw!!
The Barsail Container Arrived Today !
Primary 2 watched the new Barsail container being delivered today. Then we wrote all about it in our news…… First….. Then…… Next…. and Finally !!
P6 Work Experience
P6 children were invited to spend the 8th of June at a work experience placement. The children had a wonderful time and relished the challenge, some were even paid for all their hard work!
We received fantastic feedback from Parents and children. The children were able to experience some of the skills required for the workplace and explore their strengths. Well done to everyone who was able to take part, we understand it wasn’t convenient for all.

STEM P7 & P7/6
Girls from P7 and P7/6 were invited to fantastic day of STEM workshops at the University of the West of Scotland.
The girls listened to inspiring young woman who are making their mark on the STEM industry. This experience challenged assumptions surrounding STEM careers and showcased the vast opportunities available. It informed the girls of responsibilities and duties placed on employees and employers in the workplace.
We had a wonderful experience, we carried out experiments, engineered apps and worked in robotics. Thanks Mrs Mavers for organising this for us!
P7 Parkmains Visit
P7 had a fabulous day meeting new friends and working on STEM Challenges and sports activities at Parkmains! We are all very proud of her P7’s who are beginning the transition to S1.
