School Uniform Update

We understand that school uniform can be an expense and if your child is not in school full time straight away then it should be noted that less will be required.

I hope to have information to you soon with regards to uniform suggestions but for now I would suggest holding off and not buying lots of uniform. I will aim to get back to you by the end of the week/start of next week. Please don’t worry if you have already bought items.

We understand that new parents way want photographs of your child on their first day and any guidance will not impact that.

I will communicate any council plans for the August return as and when I can. Thank you for your patience in these unprecedented times.

Bute & Skye Fundraiser

Today was our Bute & Skye Fundraiser!!!

The charities we raised money for were: Cornerstone, Epilepsy Scotland, Young Minds & Team Mila !!!

We do not know how much money we have raised yet, but will announce it in the following week.

We had representatives from Cornerstone, Epilepsy Scotland, & Team Mila. Sadly a representative from Young Minds couldn’t make it, but they were happy to send us balloons and stickers for the Fundraiser πŸ˜€.

We are very lucky to have Mila in our school now and in a couple years her brother Luca will join us too

We would like to thank all the pupils for bringing in money and the captains for bearing with us as the children threw wet sponges at them.

National Parent Forum Message

Please see below a message from Debbie Newlands, the Renfrewshire representative forΒ National Parent Forum of Scotland (NPFS).Β  If you would like further information, please contact the Parent Council by email: barsailpc.communications@gmail.com

As you will be aware, I have represented Renfrewshire parents on the National Parent Forum of Scotland (NPFS) for many years now however, my youngest child is leaving school this June and therefore it is time for someone else to take over this role.

There are 2 positions available: Renfrewshire representative and Deputy Renfrewshire representative.

It would be most helpful if we could fill both of these roles by June 2019 to allow an easy transition and give support to each other.

The process is fairly straight forward.

  1. Every parent needs to be made aware of this role and have the opportunity to apply for a position either as Renfrewshire representative or in a deputy role to the representative.
  2. It is the role of the Parent Council Chair to share this information with their Parent Councils and the wider Parent Forum in each school.
  3. You do not need to be a member of the Parent Council to become the NPFS representative or deputy…………. you just need to be the parent of a child attending school in Renfrewshire.
  4. Anyone interested in applying for either position must write a small paragraph about themselves and why they think they are suitable for the role. It would be helpful if this could include what they could bring to the role. 5. All application paragraphs should be emailed to renfrewshire@npfs.org.uk
  5. Once the applications have been received, they will be emailed to all Parent Council (PC) Chairs to allow each PC to vote on which candidate they prefer for each role. 7. The votes will be sent to renfrewshire@npfs.org.uk
  6. The votes will then be shared and verified by 2 independent PC Chairs.
  7. The candidates will then be notified of the results.

Kind regards

Debbie Newlands

Barsail 12th place overall for P6 girls.

Barsail 5th place overall for P7 boys.

We are very proud of all our participants. Well done!

Charity Appeal by our pupils

Orla and Mara collect gifts for charity each Christmas. They are supporting Quarriers and are looking for toys, games, soft toys etc. The items need to be new and unwrapped.

We have chosen charities each year based on the wishes of our House Captains. Although this is not a chosen charity (the girls aren’t even eligible to apply for Captain as they are too young) we are always keen to promote the work of our responsible citizens. Β We supported a pupil in Brave the Shave before the holidays and we are happy to raise awareness of this appeal.

Gifts can be brought to p6 and p3. It must be made clear that they are for Quarriers and not for the Christmas Fayre. This is completely optional.

Thanks

Gold Award Presentation

We were delighted to welcome Fiona Cook from Sport Award Scotland this afternoon during a whole-school assembly. Fiona presented our Sports Committee with the Gold flag and certificate.

The feedback she gave us about our application was wonderful and the assembly really marked the incredible team effort and amount of work we’ve put in to secure the prestigious Gold Award.

We shall display our flag proudly and continue to ensure sports is a priority at Barsail in order to maintain our Gold status and provide wonderful sporting opportunities for our pupils.

Volunteers accompanying the children will need to pay the Β£2 entry fee to the Gala Day. Volunteers can do this in advance by sending in Β£2 with the tear off slip and they will be given a wrist band to wear on the day.Β  Alternatively, you can buy a wristband for Β£2 at the Farmhouse on the day.

Please complete the tear off slip below if your child wishes to take part.Β  If you have lost the letter, you can send a note with your child’s name, whether an adult will be there and a contact number for the day.

Thank you,

Emma Mavers

Corrine Hutton is climbing Mount Kilimanjaro later in the year. Β We loved doing Kinda Kili!

Community Event

Thank you to everyone who came along to join us for our community event this afternoon. The sun came out in the end thankfully and children had a fab time trying out archery, beep test, aerobics, volleyball and hockey.

Special thanks goes to our fabulous Parent Council members who made some delicious mocktails to refresh us after all that hard work. Also thanks goes to Mr Burgess and Mrs Wilson who made guest appearances- the children were delighted to see them!

Chef Visit

Thank you so much to David Smith, one of our parents who visited our infants today to host a live cooking demonstration. The children helped him make healthy pizza and a healthy version of strawberry cheesecake. Both were delicious and the children definitely enjoyed the experience.

Yum yum!

Health Week & Community Event

What an amazing time our children have had so far in Health Week. Today, our children got involved in orienteering and we had a visit from the Cinebus and watched films with an anti-bullying message.

We were also lucky enough to get involved in creative dance with Kaitlin from Active Schools. Β Kaitlin allowed the children to get creative with the latest songs and the infant children danced to Toy Story songs!

Tomorrow P6, P7/6 & P7 will learn lifesaving skills with the Heartstart team. Infant classes have a very exciting visit from a chef who is going to show the children how to cook healthy pizza with a live cooking demonstration!

We also have archery, hockey and rugby to look forward to.

Please join us for our community event at 3.15-4.30pm for some fun activities for the whole family! The event is free and includes:

  • beep test
  • archery
  • hockey games
  • disco room
  • aerobics with Mrs Wilson
  • volleyball with Mr Burgess
  • mocktail bar

Hope to see you all then!

Thank you also goes to Iain Shearer and his Active Schools team for another well-run tournament.

Health Week Volunteers

Thank you to all who have volunteered to help during Health Week (11th-16th June) this year. I shall be contacting you very soon to arrange dates and times. Could I ask anyone who has yet to bring the form back to do so by Friday? We are still looking for parent helpers for Sports Day (Tuesday 12th 1-3pm) and the community event (Thursday 14th 3.15-4.15pm).

I’m also looking for donations of different types of rope including washing rope, pegs and old bed sheets for our den building equipment. Donations of suitcases would be more than welcome to provide storage for these items.

Many thanks in advance for your support.

Mrs Gibney

Talent Show!

Well done to the finalists in the Takent Show- what an array of talent!

Thanks to the Pupil Council and Mr Armstrong for organising this slick, high quality event.

Check out the videos of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and two highly commended acts on the school twitter feed!

Sharing good practice

We are delighted that Mrs Gooding and Miss Morrison were asked to showcase work their classes have been doing. The children have been learning about Mathematics through a real life context.

Over 100 teachers were in attendance at the Renfrewshire event where practitioners were sharing good practice.

RENERS Football cup

Barsail WON the football tournament today!!!!!

A nail biting finish with penalties deciding the final against St Anne’s!

P3 Energy Detectives

P3 were energy detectives this morning! Β We worked our way round 8 stations and observed energy transfer taking place at each one. Β Our favourite was definitely the station where we got to eat chocolate buttons (chemical energy in food πŸ˜€πŸ«.)

PleaseΒ Β ask your child about the different types of energy, the definition of energy and the Law of Conservation of energy. Β I am sure you will be super impressed with their knowledge πŸ˜€

Den Building

Please help us create den building kits. We need:

old suitcases to store the kits

old table cloths/bed linen

Any other items to create dens.

Respect our Playground

Community Police have been involved in reviewing CCTV footage as items in our playground have been vandalised recently. The playhouse has been broken several times. The new picnic benches (which are extremely heavy) have been moved.

One of our pupils has created this poster and I wanted to share it with our families. Help us to spread the word. We are happy for children to enjoy the grounds, play on the trim trail, use the MUGA etc. All that we ask is that you respect our playground.

Awards and achievements

Today at assembly we discussed how important it is to SHOW our values. Β We all KNOW them but the hard part is to SHOW them.

New benches for Barsail

The guys from Kleentek Valeting very kindly offered to clean the benches we recently received from Bargarran Primary. πŸ˜€ They power washed them and they can now be used by our pupils in the primary 4 and 5 playground. Thanks again for all your hard work. πŸ‘πŸ»

P4/3 P.E. Fun with Craig

P4/3 have thoroughly enjoyed having Craig from Park Mains working with us this year. Β He has been coming along every week and Β worked with us on lots of fun activities during our P.E. sessions. Β We have developed our fitness, rugby, badminton, tennis and athletic skills taking part in lots of interesting and challenging games.

Today we were sad to say goodbye to Craig but we wish him lots of luck and success as he heads into his S6 exams and then moves on to university next year.

Barsail and the Big Pedal

Barsail are taking part in the Big Pedal and would like to encourage the children to scoot or cycle to school until Thursday the 3rd of May.

The children can bring their scooters or bikes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. They can be chained up on one of the bike racks. There is a bike rack outside the P2 classroom and another two outside the P7 classroom.

P6 have cycling proficiency on a Wednesday so we would not advise the children to bring scooters or bikes on a Wednesday.

The children should wear a helmet and dismount once they have entered the school playground.

Happy cycling and scooting

Corrine Hutton

Corrine Hutton came to talk to us about how she lost her hands and feet. She also told us about the charity finding your feet where they help amputees. She told us that sometimes she felt like giving up but she kept on going and now she is going to climb Kilimanjaro. She said we have to tell ourselves WE CAN DO IT. Never give up!

P4/3 Scientists with Dr Michelle Bellingham

Wow! Β What a fun start to our day we had today! We were extremely lucky to welcome to our class Hannah’s mum, who is a scientist at Glasgow University.

We have been studying the human body and Dr Bellingham very kindly offered to come in and allow us to be scientists with her for the morning. Β We we able to share with her all our fantastic knowledge and also learn lots of new and interesting facts.

She brought in microscopes for us to look through. Β We got to see what the cells of our organs look like up close. Β It was amazing!

We also got to look at lots of different models of our body parts. Β We tried to fit them all back together. Β The brain was particularly hard to put back together again!

We all had such good fun being mini scientists and many of us are now wanting to be scientists when we grow up.

We would like to thank Michelle for coming in today, it was such a fantastic opportunity for us.  We look forward to her returning to visit us again. 😊

P4/3 Pupil Focus Groups Week

Wow! Β What can we say other than Wow! Β It has been an extremely busy and fun filled week. Β We all thoroughly enjoyed it and want to thank all the pupil groups and the teachers for all the hard work and effort put into organising the special days.

Now time to enjoy Easter.  Happy holidays everyone! 🐣

P7/6 World of Workers

P7/6 had an inspiring day exploring the world of work. We learned about CVs, references and we even conducted mock interviews where we quizzed each other about our skills and attributes. Β We loved speaking to everyone at the career fayre.

I was super impressed with both the interviewer and interviewee skills! Very professional.

Always reach for the stars!

Talented Pupils

Well done to the two pupils who were asked to play in Β the Renfrewshire Schools Band. One pupil was playing the accordion and the other pupil played the guitar. The video is on Twitter!

Our basketball team reached the finals in a Renfrewshire competition! They played well and were second overall. This is the second year running that we have been pipped at the post. Β They are winners in our eyes!

Outdoor Equipment

Thank you so much to Aura Homeworks, Cutting Edge Landscape Gardeners and family volunteers for creating this wonderful playhouse for the pupils in Barsail Primary. This will be very well used as we develop play pedagogy.

P7/6 World Book Day

P7/6 had an amazing time celebrating a belated World Book Day. We started off with ERIC time (everyone reading in class) where the children got to choose anywhere in the classroom to read a book- we were very inventive!

We watched an Author’s Live event starring David Williams then drew our own Gangsta Grannies and found amazing descriptive phrases using thesauruses to help us.

We finished off the day by designing book tokens for the World Book Day competition.

Head Teacher Update

I have spent three days and nights at a Head Teacher leadership academy this week. It is fair to say that it pushed me out of my comfort zone and it was tough at times – it was full on from 8:30am until 10pm every day. However- what an experience. I have made connections with primary and secondary Head Teachers from across Scotland. We are determined to ensure that this leads to collaboration and the sharing of good practice.

I am committed to being a Head Teacher who continually learns. I will use what I have learned to continue to build upon the amazing culture we have in Barsail. I will strive to be the best version of myself in doing so.

Values- ambition, teamwork, success

Dream Big, Aim High, Achieve More!

Never stop learning.

Athletics is SNOW problem for usπŸƒπŸ»β€β™‚οΈβ„οΈ

The athletics club were a little disappointed to not be outside yesterday due to the weather. However we had so much fun pushing our fitness levels to the limit!

We used Miss Binning’s classroom as our gym and challenged ourselves in rounds of exercises. We worked with our partners to encourage and support them, whilst ensuring their posture was correct to avoid injury. We also tried to beat our last score and it got a little competitive!

The snow won’t stop us!

Oooops Sorry Date Change

World Book Day will now be 9th March as per Seesaw post.

Last nights blog said 2nd but as we are off today that isn’t practical.

Sorry for any confusion and I am encouraged by the fact that many of you spotted the mistake! You are clearly engaging with our communication methods so thank you!

Mrs Mavers

World Book Day is a SNOW DAY but you can still take part!

Unfortunately the children will miss World Book Day in school tomorrow. Β Please try to celebrate at home! Β The children could still dress up. Β They could do some extreme reading in the snow or on a sledge. Β You could visit the story corner on our website (under curriculum) and allow them to listen to stories.

Consider cosying up and diving into a story book or novel with your child.

Why not visit the Literacy section of the website and play games?

The children should be able to access their Education City and Sumdog too.

Mrs Cassells and the Literacy Leaders have spent a lot of time planning World Book Day. I know that some parents may also have spent time organising costumes. We will have World Book Day on Friday 9th March! The coffee afternoon and talk from Corrine will be rescheduled and we will let you know when it will be held.

Of course, we want you all to enjoy the snow and stay safe too!

Mrs Mavers

Maths and Munch

Thank you to everyone who attended the Maths and Munch evening.Β  Reviewing the feedback, it is safe to say that it was a huge success.Β  I hope that you find the Parent Guides useful.Β  If you were unable to come, you can access the Parent Guides on our website.Β  As a rough guide, the appropriate guide for pupils in each stage would be:

P1 – Early level

P2-4 First level

P5-7 – Second level.

Depending on your child’s confidence with Maths, you might want to look at the guide before or after.

The guides provide examples of how we teach key mathematical concepts in school.Β  They also provide tips for you to consider at home and websites.

Please go to the Barsail website, then Curriculum, Numeracy – Parent Prompts.

Please visit our Twitter page to see more posts relating to this event.Β  Follow us and hit the heart button for posts that you like.

Thank you,

Mrs Mavers

Defibrillator in Barsail

Barsail have received a very generous donation from a family – a defibrillator. We are delighted to have this life saving piece of equipment and have taken the responsibility for it seriously. It is located near the staffroom in the front entrance and is for school and community use. Staff and some Parent Council members undertook training on Friday. We will talk to the children about it at an assembly.

More information to follow in a letter.

Mrs Mavers

World book day πŸ“š

The children are welcome to dress as a book character on Thursday. There is no pressure to do this and PLEASE don’t buy anything new for it. Own clothes is another option.

THE FOCUS IS ON READING. It doesn’t matter what you wear when you are enjoying a book.

Corrine Hutton will inspire the children in the afternoon.

If you are able to send in a donation, it will go to Corrine’s charity- Finding your Feet.

We would love to see mums, dads, grans, grandpas and friends at the coffee afternoon at 2:15pm where you can hear from Corrine. She is a remarkable woman with incredible strength.

I am sure that she will inspire us all to…

Dream Big, Aim High, Achieve More!

We are looking forward to our curriculum evening on Monday!Β  Please send back the slip or a note to let us know if you and your child(ren) can attend.

We are buying Dominoes pizza for the children and they can wear their PJs!

We have a parent help guide to issue to adults who attend.Β  You will also hear about ways in which you can support your child(ren).Β  If you cannot make it, you will be able to download and print the guideΒ from our website after the event.

Adults and children will also be able to go around different stations and enjoyΒ  YES ENJOY Maths activities together.

We have had a positive response so far with around 100 children attending.Β  The crΓ¨che won’t be able to cater for babies / toddlers.Β  If a younger sibling is due to start Barsail in August then he/she can attend the crΓ¨che.

Maths is fun!Β  We love Maths!

What a fantastic turn out we had yesterday for the Park Run at Victoria Park in Glasgow. Our pupils did us proud and all worked extremely hard to complete the 2k run with excellent times.

Well done to everyone who participated and thanks to Joanne for organising. We hope it was a good practice run for our upcoming Cross Country event on 15th March.

P6 Swimming Lessons

Just to confirm a few details about P6 swimming lessons:

We shall be walking to the swimming pool and back and need parent volunteers- even if you could make it one of the sessions it would be a great help.

The cost of the lessons is Β£2 in total per child- we raised Β£320 between selling raffle tickets and ticket sales for the Burns Supper event which brought the total cost down from Β£400.

Thanks to everyone who attended the event and donated prizes/purchased raffle tickets. The prizes were distributed yesterday to our delighted winners.

The additional swimming lessons are a fantastic opportunity for our P6 pupils- one which we hope to repeat in coming years.

Pupils have their say

The children have been voting for what playground equipment they want the Parent Council to fund. Β Monkey bars were the most popular choice. Β Asking the children their opinion is important to us. Β We will act on this and hope to get them monkey bars to play on soon.

Tickets are Β£1 per strip and the raffle will be drawn by the end of the week. Thanks to everyone who has bought tickets so far.

Teacher Number Marathon Champions

For Number Day today, we set the children a challenge of completing a treasure hunt. Every teacher in school had a number and the first 20 children to find all 19 numbers correctly won a prize. These four number whizzes from P3 were the champions and managed to complete the treasure hunt way before everyone else!

Well done to Nathan, Kate, Jack & Sophie.

P6 Burns Supper

What a wonderful afternoon we had for our Burns Supper. A lovely atmosphere, good food and even better company. Thanks you so much to everyone who attended and helped out today.

The children cooked, prepared and served the food themselves using our new cooking equipment. I’m sure you’ll agree our children did us proud by hosting an action-packed Supper- performing poetry, highland dancing, piano playing and singing. We shall post more pictures and videos on Seesaw next week of individual performances.

School Paths

You may have noticed that the path beside Barsail has been flooded. The janitor has reported it to the council and they are going to clear the drains in that area. A small piece of fencing will be removed temporarily to allow this to happen. The fence will be replaced and the gate repaired in this part of the playground.

Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Thank you so much to all of those who kindly donated raffle prizes for P6’s Burns’ Supper. P6 pupils shall start selling raffle tickets tomorrow for one week, with winners being announced on Friday 9th February at assembly.

Barsail has got Scottish Talent

Wow, lots of talented Barsail pupils auditioned for the upcoming Scottish performance.Β  The standard was very high and we were really impressed with the children’s enthusiasm.

Unfortunately not all of the children will be able to perform their actsΒ on the day but they should all be very proud of themselves for giving great performances.

AllΒ the successful performers will find out next week at assembly.

With all this amazing BarsailΒ  talent and class acts,Β the Scottish performance will be braw!!

Running

The Cross Country competition is coming up. We would like to encourage all of our pupils to try a park run. If you are in p6-7 then this would help you train for the Cross Country.

And in case parents fancy doing one, here is the page for Linwood park run

Thank you to Joanne, one of our running club coaches, for the information.

Burns Supper Raffle Donations

P6 pupils are using their Burns Supper afternoon on Thursday 1st February as an enterprise opportunity. They hope to raise money to reduce the cost of their upcoming swimming lessons. These lessons are in addition to the council-run lessons the children received last term. We understand that being able to swim is a life skill and something every child should get the opportunity to learn to do well.

Can you help? We’re looking for raffle donations- perhaps you have an unwanted Christmas present, want to offload some of your Christmas chocolate or donate a voucher if you are a business owner. Any donations, big or small, would be very much appreciated.

Donations should be handed directly to school office or ask your child to hand it into the office by Friday 25th January.Β  We will give all children in the school a chance to buy raffle tickets the week beginning Monday 29th January. (More details to follow.)

Many thanks in advance for your support.
