In the Autumn Term of 2020, Fairview School began a journey towards gaining UNICEF accreditation as a Rights Respecting School. The Rights Respecting Schools accreditation was borne out of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Fairview school aims to be an environment where needs of every pupil are captivated and developed.  As part of our safe and friendly school, we are proud to work towards our Silver Rights Aware status and aim to begin work for our Gold Rights Respecting School award by UNICEF.

For Fairview to achieve the Silver: Rights Aware accreditation, we must have evidence that it has reached the three strands of a Rights Respecting School.  This evidence includes a pupil questionnaire. Rather than give pupils a paper questionnaire we made a short video that asks important questions regarding pupil voice.  We are pleased to share with you our questionnaire video! This video was made to enable all pupils to take part in the questionnaire. We hope you enjoy seeing the video and sharing in our work toward our Silver Award Status.

Welcome to 2022 Core and Theme Words

Welcome to a new year of core and theme words.

While spoken language has at least 250,000 words, a list of only 200 words accounts for about 80% of the words you use every day! These words are called “core words”. Another way to structure the process of teaching and modelling core words is to schedule a set of words to focus on each month. This makes modelling more manageable. We will keep adding new words regularly. Combine these with words from previous months in the end, we will teach a full vocabulary with many core words.

This year’s theme words will focus on feelings and emotions. Exploration of words around feelings and emotions will work alongside the Emotion Works approach that is used throughout the school. Emotion Works is an educational programme that puts learning at the heart of emotional health and wellbeing.

Pupils are encouraged to explore the core and theme words in class, though stories, games, activities and interactive resources.  Each month we all take part in a core and theme word Get Together where we all sign and learn all about the new words. You can be a part of our learning by learning the Makaton and on body signs that will be sent home via Seesaw along with a story and signposting to resources and activities.
