Perthshire school demonstrates how skills give pupils the edge

Last week Blairgowrie High School provided the inspiration for a group of Indian education specialists hoping to mirror Scotland’s success in preparing young people for the world of work.

The delegates were on a fact-finding mission to witness first-hand how the practical and vocational skills pupils develop in the classroom can be put to use in the workplace.

The visit, organised by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and the National Accreditation Board for Education and Training in India (NABET), took in pupil demonstrations in the purpose built teaching kitchen and restaurant at Blairgowrie High School. Delegates enjoyed a marvellous lunch prepared by pupils and assisted by Willie Little of Little’s restaurant in Blairgowrie – one of the school’s business partners.  The school has many business partners linked to the success of developing hospitality skills of young people including Love to Eat and ELM associates (event organisation), who also had representatives at the lunch.

The visitors from India were on a week-long tour of Scotland taking in other examples of how young people’s skills and talents are identified and enhanced including a focus on the construction industry, a visit to the site of the new South Glasgow Hospital and an overview of hair and beauty training before five of the delegation heads to Dundee to complete a course on becoming master-trainers, enabling them to pass on coaching and development skills to other teachers once they return to their schools in India.

Lynn Smith, Principal Teacher of Home Economics at Blairgowrie High School, said: “Skills for work courses focus on developing generic employability skills that young people need to succeed in the work place. They are flexible enough to allow us to tailor what we offer to our pupils, allowing us to develop good relationships with local employers and they have definitely contributed to our success in ensuring our pupils end up in positive destinations – either going on to further or higher education, training or employment.”

Youth and Philanthropy Initiative

A number of local charities sent representatives to the school on Wednesday, 21st August 2013, to meet S3 pupils who are participating in the Youth & Philanthropy Initiative.

The purpose of the gathering was to allow groups of pupils to gain as much information as possible about the charities. This information will help the pupils choose a subject for a presentation promoting a particular charity.

Armed with a list of pre-determined questions, each class spent twenty minutes with the representatives, and gathered as much useful information as they could.

The charities’ representatives said they were very impressed with the enthusiasm and interest shown by the majority of the pupils, and all indicated that they would be happy to participate in similar events in the future.

Pupils also indicated that they were impressed by the variety of work done by local charities. Everyone was grateful that the charities had made time to come to the school, and all agreed that the information they had received would be useful to them in creating their presentations.

Action Man Egan

Brave Mr Egan kept his promise and jumped off the Bridge at Killiecrankie this morning to raise funds for the school. He did very well and came back up in one piece, which is a bonus! Naive about the consequences as we were, we might just have made him another of those Adrenalin-Junkies. On the way back he was talking about parachuting!!!

Watch his jump here

There is still time to donate if you enjoyed his jump! Hand in your sponship forms and any donations to the school office before the end of term.

Well done Mr Egan!

Youth and Philanthropy Initiative

On Wednesday, 19th June 2013 representatives from schools the length and breadth of Scotland gathered in Perth for the Youth & Philanthropy Initiative annual event. This was a celebration of a year’s hard work by hundreds of school pupils. Each group present at the event had earned £3000 for their chosen charity.

Among those present were five enterprising young men from Blairgowrie High School whose sterling efforts had culminated in a much needed £3000 boost to the fortunes of the local charity Wisecraft.

John Driscoll, Kieran Matthews, Cole McCulloch, Drew Madoc-Jones and Kenny Watson – all S5 pupils – worked extremely hard in school and in their own time to produce a very impressive presentation which the local judges unanimously thought worthy of the prize.

Click here to watch the report.

While the funds went to charity, the boys – and the many hundreds of pupils across the country who also participated in the Youth & Philanthropy Initiative this year – were rewarded with the event in Perth Concert Hall. Among the speakers were Sir William Wood, Chairman of the Wood Trust which sponsors the YPI programme in Scotland, and Olympic gold medallist Katherine Grainger (both pictured below with our worthy winners).

BHS Literacy Week

June 10-14 was Literacy Week at Blairgowrie High School

Advanced Higher English pupils created a presentation which was shown to all assemblies Click here to view it.

Authors John Fardell, Cathy MacPhail, Lisa Nicol, Clare Damadoran and Nick Hesketh joined us for sessions with all years.  There was a sponsored spell and we all Dropped Everything to Read together on Wednesday.

Profiling in P7 and S3

What is a profile?

A profile is a snapshot of a young person’s best achievements at a given point in time. The content of the profile is decided by the young person.

As P7 pupils prepare to move from primary to secondary school they will be completing their P7 profile. From June 2013 all S3 learners will have a profile which reflects their progress in learning and achievement.

Find out more about Profiles  here
