John Muir Award Growing Projects and an Update about Max the Robot
This year the older children are again working towards John Muir Awards – having progressed to the level 2 ‘Explorer Award’. The children are working on a variety of projects related to discovering, exploring, conserving and sharing their ‘place’. Once again the green house and growing projects have played a key role. Earlier this spring we planted approximately 60 more trees in our back field, including 5 apple trees. It’s amazing to see them blossoming already!
Our work with Max the Robot has continued quietly in the background over the last few months. This has been a great year long project, coming and going when we have time and to fit in with the weather. It’s amazing that the children have had the chance to be involved with cutting edge research. We’ve managed to meet the main objectives of the project, to train the robot to drive routes independently. Inside school we trained the robot to drive around the hall and we have now also trained ‘Max’ to drive from the school to the local shop on his own. We will be sharing our project at a schools Celebration of Engineering in Kirkwall in mid-June.
