Our spring gardening projects

It is beginning to feel like spring at Papay School and there’s been quite a few things going on.

1 – Our daffodils and crocuses from November have all begun to grow. We’ve also been planting bulbs which will flower in the Autumn in the gaps between the daffodils.

2 – Mossy Duck has begun to lay eggs again so we are enjoying collecting them each morning.

3 – We’ve now received almost all of our new tools and waterproofs which have been kindly provided by the Community Climate Asset Fund. The tools are immediately being put to use as shown below. The fund has also allowed us to buy blackboards and books on the subject of climate change and gardening. We’re planning to put one up in our newly renovated outdoor classroom.

4 — We’ve been working with the Market Garden where our vegetable patch now has a nice new fence. We’ve also been planting a variety of seeds such as purple sprouted broccoli, pumpkins and french beans which are beginning to grow in the Market Garden Polytunnels.

5 – We’ve also received local support with renovating our greenhouse. In particular with replacing some of the glass panes which have been missing for quite some time. This inspired us to spend a sunny afternoon spring cleaning, washing windows and weeding around the outside. The greenhouse suddenly feels like a totally new place to learn and we have planted lots of seeds for a variety of flowers, tomatoes and more pumpkins.

6 – We have begun planning a Wheelbarrow Competition which will be open to all island residents. More details will be coming soon in a separate blog post.
