PHYSICAL EDUCATION

“Physical education provides learners with a platform from which they can build physical competences, improve aspects of fitness, and develop personal and interpersonal skills and attributes. It enables learners to develop the concepts and skills necessary for participation in a wide range of physical activity, sport, dance and outdoor learning, and enhances their physical wellbeing in preparation for leading a fulfilling, active and healthy lifestyle.” (Curriculum for Excellence: Health and Wellbeing, Experiences and Outcomes)

Throughout the school year, PE lessons will take place both indoors and outdoors (when the weather permits) so that we are able to take advantage of the excellent outdoor space we have at our disposal! Pupils will be given the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities and these will cover the following broader categories of:

  • Invasion Games
  • Net Games
  • Target Games
  • Aesthetics (Gymnastics & Dance)
  • Fitness/Active Health
  • Athletics
  • Striking & Fielding

When pupils participate in these types of activities during PE lessons, the emphasis is on learning to love movement but also to love learning through movement! PE lessons will not only encourage pupils to develop their physical competencies, key movement skills and their physical fitness but also will promote the development of mental/cognitive, emotional and social skills and abilities. PE focuses on a holistic approach to wellbeing and lessons are centred on the key Significant Aspects of Learning.

All PE lessons are delivered in a way which makes them both inclusive and challenging for all of our pupils and they are supported to face challenge and change with a positive attitude. To ensure pupils remain safe and are able to participate fully in lessons, they are required to bring a full PE kit to school with them. A PE kit does not have to consist of sport specific clothing but rather a change of clothing which is comfortable and will allow them to move freely and safely. Appropriate PE kit can consist of a mix of the following items which should be a full change from the clothing worn to school that day:

  • Tops – T-shirts, polo shirts or long sleeved tops. Pupils are welcome to wear hoodies or jumpers over these especially during terms 1 & 4 when PElessons are more likely to be outdoors.
  • Bottoms – shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms.
  • Shoes – plimsoles, trainers or indoor football trainers.

By ensuring pupils bring a PE kit with them each week they are further developing their organisation skills (as well as well as ensuring their personal safety and hygiene) and the ability to achieve their full potential by being ready to learn in an active environment.

We hope that by participating in our PE lessons pupils will develop a love for movement that will stay with them throughout their school days and into adulthood in order for them to continue to maintain active and healthy lifestyles in the future.
