I can use a variety of mental strategies to help me with addition problems.

 

Activity 1: Recap

When adding several numbers in your head, there are several different strategies you can use.  Often, it is useful to look for number bonds (two numbers that you add together to make 10, such as 7 and 3).  Before we start our written tasks today, lets have a quick practise of our number bonds on Hit the Button. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Did any of you paint a stone last week?  It has caught on in my village, every time I go on a walk I come across a new one.  My neice is still churning them out, here is a few that she made last week. 🎨

I can write an information report.

 

Warm Up:

It has been a few weeks now since we have written an information report, due to the Easter holidays.  Watch this BBC Bitesize clip again as a reminder of the key features of an information report. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zkgcwmn/articles/zffy92p

 

Main Task:

First thing is first; you need to decide which planet you would like to research and write your report on today.  This is a useful website for your research https://nineplanets.org/kids/.  Additionally, this website also has some great information: https://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/planets.html.

Here is an example of an information report about a planet:

Similar to our example, I would recommend that your subheadings be

  1. Introduction
  2. Appearance
  3. Size
  4. Temperature
  5. Time

You may also wish to have a ‘Did You Know’ paragraph.

 

Your success criteria today are:

✔ Title (name of planet)

✔ Subheading 1: Introduction

✔ Subheading 2: Appearance (what colour it is, is it a gas, rocky or ice planet, does it have any rings, does it have any moons etc.).

✔ Subheading 3: Size (how big it is compared to Earth and the other planets, how far away from the Sun it is, etc.)

✔ Subheading 4: Temperature

✔ Subheading 5: Time (in comparison to Earth years, how long is a year on your chosen planet?)

✔ Subheading 6: Other Facts and Information (You do not have to include this subheading if you do not wish)

Lastly – remember you must write in your own words, you can’t just copy straight from the website!

Draw a picture of your planet to illustrate your information report. 🎨

Literacy:

Today for our literacy task we will be learning how to use apostrophes in our writing.  Apostrophes are used for two main jobs, showing possession and showing omission.

Apostrophes for possession show that a thing belongs to someone or something. For example: Anna’s book was ripped.

The apostrophe in this sentence shows that the book belongs to Anna.

Apostrophes for omission show where something, usually a letter, has been missed out. For example, you can write ‘haven’t rather than have not.

Today we are going to focus on using contractions (where two words have been joined together to create a shorter word that is quicker to say).

 

Thursday 23rd April

I can use apostrophes in a contraction to indicate missing letters.

Opening night

Tim took another deep breath. Inside his chest, he could feel his heart pounding like a bass drum. Again, he took slow, deep breaths and picked up his script. Morning all, I hope that you are all doing well! We have reached the end of another week of learning from home, doesn’t it feel like such a long time since we have been at school?  A big thumbs up to everyone who has been remembering to use Sumdog as well as the learning tasks that I have been posting – the boys especially are absolutely smashing it! Easter Poem

I can write an acrostic poem.

 

Warm Up:

Brainstorm sights and sounds that you might see or hear in springtime or at Easter.

Main Task:

Using the letters of EASTER, write an acrostic poem (you could do HAPPY EASTER if you want a challenge 🌶).

✓ The first line should begin with a word starting with the letter ‘E’, the second line should begin with a word starting with the letter ‘A’ and so on…

✓ Include as much VCOP as you can – think of the vocabulary that you are using, try to make it as interesting and exciting as possible.

✓ Try to include literary techniques (such as alliteration, similes, metaphors and parentheses)

  1. The Easter Bunny has 103 eggs in his basket. 47 fell out on the way to the ‘Great Egg Hunt’. How many does the Easter Bunny have now?
  2. The Easter Bunny has 243 eggs in his basket. It then puts 128 more in his basket. How many does the Easter Bunny have now?
  3. The Easter Bunny wants to put each of his eggs in a box, which cost 25p. It has 8 eggs. How much will it need to spend?
  4. The Easter Bunny has 5 boxes that it needs to fill equally with his 75 eggs. How many eggs will go in each box?

Comprehension

I can demonstrate my understanding of a text by making inferences and justifying them with evidence.

 

Warm Up:

Reminder: Making an inference is all about using what you have read in the text to make an educated guess.  Watch this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oqdI5JMJnM.  The actress in the video was not told that her character was feeling unhappy but she used what she had learned about her character’s day to guess that was how she was probably feeling.

Main Task:

Excerpt taken from ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ by Cressida Cowell, Chapter 10, p.134-7. 🐉

Eventually Stoick came out of the Huddle and stood before the boys, who were hanging their heads in shame, their dragons at their feet.

If Hiccup had been able to look at his father, he would have seen that Stoick was not his normal, merry, violent self. He looked very solemn indeed.

“Novices of the Tribes,” he bellowed grimly, “this is a very bad day for all of you. You have FAILED the Final Test of the Initiation Program. By the fierce Law of the Inner Isles this means that you should be cast out from the Tribes into exile FOREVER. I do not want to do this, not only because my own son is among you, but also because it will mean that a whole generation of warriors is lost from the Tribes. But we cannot ignore our Law. Only the strong can belong, in case the blood of the Tribes should be weakened. Only Heroes can be Hooligans and Meatheads.”

“Under normal circumstances,” said Stoick, “the ceremony of exile would start now. But going to sea in weather like this would mean certain death for all concerned. As an act of mercy, I will allow you one more night of shelter under my roof, and first thing tomorrow morning you will be set ashore on the Mainland to fend for yourselves. From this moment forth, you are all banished and may not talk to any other member of your Tribe.”

The thunder crashed all around the boys as they stood, heads bowed, in the rain.

“Pity me, for this is saddest thing I have ever had to do, to banish my own son,” said Stoick sadly.  “A Chief cannot live like other people,” said Stoick, looking almost pleadingly at Hiccup. “He has to decide what is for the good of the Tribe.”

Suddenly Hiccup was very angry.

“Well, don’t expect ME to pity you!” said Hiccup. “What kind of father thinks his stupid Laws are more important than his own son? And what kind of stupid Tribe is this anyway, that it can’t just have ordinary people in it?”

Stoick stood looking down at his son in surprise and shock for a moment. Then he turned round and trudged off.

“I’ve lost my t-t- tooth,” Toothless complained whinily. “C-c-came out when I hit that F-f-fireworm dragon.” 

Hiccup took no notice.

 

 

Write down as many adjectives as you can for how the Stoick, Hiccup and Toothless are feeling at this moment in the story.  Beside each adjective write a quote from the text to justify your choice.

For example:

Stoick the Vast

Sad – “He looked very solemn indeed”

 

Try to get 3 inferences for Stoick and Hiccup.  1 inference is enough for Toothless as he does not play a big part in this scene.

 

Extension:

Gather as many words from the text as you can find which suggest to the reader how the character is feeling.  You may be able to find more than one word/words from the text that show the same thing (I could find 4 different parts of the text that suggested that Stoick was miserable).

For example you can tell that the boys were feeling embarrassed because it says that they were “hanging their heads in shame”.

I can separate a number into parts in order to halve it.

 

Activity 1: Simple Halving

Find half of these numbers:

  1. 16
  2. 20
  3. 18
  4. 30
  5. 40
  6. 50

 

Activity 2: Halving by Partitioning

Split the following numbers into tens and units.  Half the tens, half the units then add them both together.

 

Activity 3: Halving 3-digit Numbers

Split the numbers into hundreds, tens and units.  Half the hundreds, half the tens and half the units then add all three numbers together to calculate the answer.
