Literacy:

Today for our literacy task we will be writing an information report on a planet of your choice! πŸͺ

Friday 24th March

Information Report

I can write an information report.

Warm Up:

It has been a few weeks now since we have written an information report, due to the Easter holidays.Β  Watch this BBC Bitesize clip again as a reminder of the key features of an information report. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zkgcwmn/articles/zffy92p

Main Task:

First thing is first; you need to decide which planet you would like to research and write your report on today.Β  This is a useful website for your research https://nineplanets.org/kids/.Β  Additionally, this website also has some great information: https://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/planets.html.

Here is an example of an information report about a planet:

Similar to our example, I would recommend that your subheadings be

  1. Introduction
  2. Appearance
  3. Size
  4. Temperature
  5. Time

You may also wish to have a β€˜Did You Know’ paragraph.

Your success criteria today are:

βœ” Title (name of planet)

βœ” Subheading 1: Introduction

βœ” Subheading 2: Appearance (what colour it is, is it a gas, rocky or ice planet, does it have any rings, does it have any moons etc.).

βœ” Subheading 3: Size (how big it is compared to Earth and the other planets, how far away from the Sun it is, etc.)

βœ” Subheading 4: Temperature

βœ” Subheading 5: Time (in comparison to Earth years, how long is a year on your chosen planet?)

βœ” Subheading 6: Other Facts and Information (You do not have to include this subheading if you do not wish)

Lastly – remember you must write in yourΒ own words, you can’t just copy straight from the website!

Extension:

Draw a picture of your planet to illustrate your information report. 🎨

Miss Donaldson ✨

πŸ› Thursday 23rd April πŸ¦‹

Good morning everyone! I hope you are all well, keeping active and, most importantly, feeling happy and optimistic!Β  I’m missing you all so much and am sending you all a big virtual hug! πŸ’“

Literacy:

Today for our literacy task we will be learning how to use apostrophes in our writing.Β  Apostrophes are used for two main jobs, showing possession and showing omission.

Apostrophes for possession show that a thing belongs to someone or something. For example: Anna’s book was ripped.

The apostrophe in this sentence shows that the book belongs to Anna.

Apostrophes for omission show where something, usually a letter, has been missed out. For example, you can write ‘haven’t rather than have not.

Today we are going to focus on using contractions (where two words have been joined together to create a shorter word that is quicker to say).

Thursday 23rd April

Contractions

I can use apostrophes in a contraction to indicate missing letters.

Β

Warm Up:

Watch this video to remind yourself how we use apostrophes to contract two words. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvwwxnb/articles/zcyv4qt

Main Task:

Activity 1: Contract

Write the contraction for each set of words.

Activity 2: Expand

Write the words that each contraction stands for.

Activity 3: Explain the Mistake

Explain the mistake in each sentence before writing it out so it is correct.

  1. Its cold out’side today.
  2. I told her I did’nt do it.
  3. The dog chased after it’s ball.
  4. We willn’t be coming for dinner after all.

Activity 4: Contraction Story.

Rewrite β€˜It’s My Party!’, using contractions for the highlighted words.

Extension:

Rewrite the sentences below using apostrophes to contract some of the words.

  1. We are off to the park later and Sally said she is coming too. I do not know who else will be there as it was not planned very well.
  2. He did not think the rain would stop. They were not going to make it to the beach. The sun had not shone all day.
  3. I must have been fast asleep because I did not hear you come in. It has been a long day and I have been up since six o’clock this morning.
  4. We have got to rush as she will be arriving at the airport soon. We should have got up earlier this morning. We would have had plenty of time then.

Complete the quizzes at the bottom of the BBC Bitesize clip you watched for the warm up task. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvwwxnb/articles/zcyv4qt

Literacy:

Today we will be continuing to work on the skill of making inferences! πŸ”Ž

Wednesday 22nd April

Comprehension

I can demonstrate my understanding of a text by making inferences and justifying them with evidence.

Warm Up:

Reminder: Making an inference is all about using what you have read in the text to make an educated guess.

Warm-Up Questions

  1. The child stood on the pavement clenching her ice cream cone. Beads of sweat collected on her little nose as she furiously licked at the ice cream dripping down her hand.

What can we infer?

a. The child was getting full from eating ice cream.

b. The child didn’t like the ice cream.

c. The child was eating ice cream on a hot day.

d. The child was eating ice cream on a cold day.

  1. Bill and Jessica were almost finished taking turns choosing players for their teams. It was Jessica’s turn to choose, and only Kyle was left. Jessica said, β€œKyle.”

We can infer that

a. Kyle is not a very good player.

b. Jessica was pleased to have Kyle on her team.

c. Kyle was the best player in the class.

d. Jessica and Kyle do not like one another.

Main Task:

Read the story starter below and answer the comprehension questions.Β  Remember to include quotations from the text to support your answers.

Opening night

Tim took another deep breath. Inside his chest, he could feel his heart pounding like a bass drum. Again, he took slow, deep breaths and picked up his script. Flicking through the pages, he read through his lines quietly to himself, mumbling under his breath. All his hard work over the last few months had been for tonight. Crossing his fingers tightly, he wished for good luck.

β€œTim, are you ready? You’re on in 2 minutes,” said Mr. Smith.

β€œI think so, Sir,” said Tim in a shaky voice.

β€œDon’t worry, you’ll be fine, Tim. Break a leg!”

Slowly, Tim stood up and made his way towards the heavy, red velvet curtain. He pulled it to the side and stepped through.

Β

Questions

  1. How do you think Tim is feeling at the beginning of the text?
  2. Explain how you know how he is feeling. Provide evidence from the text to support your answer.
  3. What do you think Tim is waiting to do?
  4. What clues told you what Tim might be doing?
  5. Who do you think Mr. Smith is?
  6. Do you think β€œOpening Night” is a good title? Why?
  7. If you had to give this text a different title, what would you call it?

Extension:

On Monday I was watching a Pixar short film called β€˜For the Birds’ (I have bought Disney+ to help me get through this isolation!)Β  As I was watching it I was thinking about how, though the birds do not explicitly tell us how they feel about the big bird, we can infer a lot about their thoughts and feelings from their actions.Β  Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYTrIcn4rjg

The whole film is without words. If the birds could talk, what do you think they might be saying?

Main Task: Multiplying by a Multiple of 10

02.04.20Β  Β  Β  Β  Β Multiplying by a Multiple of 10

I can use my knowledge of table facts and multiplying by ten, a hundred or a thousand to work out new facts.

Activity 1: Times Tables

I have set a Sumdog Times Table Challenge for you all.Β  Your target is 50 correct answers but you only have 1 day to complete it!

Activity 2: Multiply by a multiple of 10

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/znj7hyc/articles/zntc7nb

Let’s use what we practised last week to help us multiply by a multiple of 10.

e.g. Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  4×5 = 20

so 40x 5 = 200 because it is ten times more.

🌢

1) 80 x 2 =
2) 90 x 3=
3) 50 x 8 =
4) 90 x 5 =
5) 20 x 6 =

🌢🌢

6) 80 x __ =320
7) __ x 70 =350
8) __ x 60 = 180
9) 70 x __ = 560
10) __ x 70 = 210

Activity 3: Multiply by a multiple of 100

Well done now let’s get a bit harder:

e.gΒ  Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  4×5 = 20

so… Β Β Β Β Β Β  400 x5 = 2,000 because you multiply 4×5 by 100.

🌢

1. 3 x 200 =
2. 400 x 6 =
3. 600 x 9 =
4. 4 x 800 =
5. 700 x5 =

🌢🌢

6. 3 x ______ = 2,100
7. __ x 400 = 2,000
8. _____ x 9 = 7,200
9. 400 x ___ = 1,200
10. 600 x ___ = 1,800

Traffic Light today’s work and leave a comment to say how you found multiplying by a multiple of 10.

Β

Extension:

🌢🌢🌢

Got it? Try these questions which are a mix of multiplying by 10, 100 and 1,000.Β  Remember when you multiply by 1,000 all your digits move 3 places to the left on your place value chart.

e.g. 4,000 x 5

4 x 5 = 20

So…        4,000 x 5 = 20,000.

Mrs McLeod sent me a message yesterday to say that J.K.Rowling has launched a new β€˜Harry Potter at Home’ site to keep everyone busy whilst we are staying home.Β  There are lots of activities from art lessons, news articles, quizzes and puzzles.Β  For example, there is a quiz all about The Philosopher’s Stone.Β  Since we have all read this why don’t you take the quiz and see how much you remember about the story (not to boast but I scored 10/10!). πŸ§™πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈβœ¨

Main Task:

Excerpt taken from β€˜How to Train Your Dragon’ by Cressida Cowell, Chapter 10, p.134-7. πŸ‰

Eventually Stoick came out of the Huddle and stood before the boys, who were hanging their heads in shame, their dragons at their feet.

If Hiccup had been able to look at his father, he would have seen that Stoick was not his normal, merry, violent self. He looked very solemn indeed.

“Novices of the Tribes,” he bellowed grimly, “this is a very bad day for all of you. You have FAILED the Final Test of the Initiation Program. By the fierce Law of the Inner Isles this means that you should be cast out from the Tribes into exile FOREVER. I do not want to do this, not only because my own son is among you, but also because it will mean that a whole generation of warriors is lost from the Tribes. But we cannot ignore our Law. Only the strong can belong, in case the blood of the Tribes should be weakened. Only Heroes can be Hooligans and Meatheads.”

“Under normal circumstances,” said Stoick, “the ceremony of exile would start now. But going to sea in weather like this would mean certain death for all concerned. As an act of mercy, I will allow you one more night of shelter under my roof, and first thing tomorrow morning you will be set ashore on the Mainland to fend for yourselves. From this moment forth, you are all banished and may not talk to any other member of your Tribe.”

The thunder crashed all around the boys as they stood, heads bowed, in the rain.

“Pity me, for this is saddest thing I have ever had to do, to banish my own son,” said Stoick sadly.Β  “A Chief cannot live like other people,” said Stoick, looking almost pleadingly at Hiccup. “He has to decide what is for the good of the Tribe.”

Suddenly Hiccup was very angry.

“Well, don’t expect ME to pity you!” said Hiccup. “What kind of father thinks his stupid Laws are more important than his own son? And what kind of stupid Tribe is this anyway, that it can’t just have ordinary people in it?”

Stoick stood looking down at his son in surprise and shock for a moment. Then he turned round and trudged off.

“I’ve lost my t-t- tooth,” Toothless complained whinily. “C-c-came out when I hit that F-f-fireworm dragon.”Β

Hiccup took no notice.

Write down as many adjectives as you can for how the Stoick, Hiccup and Toothless are feeling at this moment in the story.Β  Beside each adjective write a quote from the text to justify your choice.

For example:

Stoick the Vast

Sad – β€œHe looked very solemn indeed”

Try to get 3 inferences for Stoick and Hiccup.Β  1 inference is enough for Toothless as he does not play a big part in this scene.

Extension:

Gather as many words from the text as you can find which suggest to the reader how the character is feeling.Β  You may be able to find more than one word/words from the text that show the same thing (I could find 4 different parts of the text that suggested that Stoick was miserable).

For example you can tell that the boys were feeling embarrassed because it says that they were β€œhanging their heads in shame”.

Yesterday’s short story by David Walliams came from his book β€˜The World’s Worst Children 2’ and is entitled β€˜Humbert the Hungry Baby’.Β  It’s really funny – have a listen!
