For the last two days, Primary 5 have been practicing our songs on the stage in preparation for the school show.  They are coming along really well but, as we all know, practice makes perfect!  For your homework this week all I ask is that you are all practicing both of your songs at least twice a night to make sure that you know the words inside-out and back-to-front by the time the show is upon us!

In addition, please could everyone bring in:

• bright trousers/ leggings/ tights – preferably white or plain coloured (orange, red, black)
• t-shirt – plain colour black or red
• gym shoes or soft trainers
• Any accessories you can use as fire breathers – fish net gloves etc.

Please bring in, in a labelled bag ASAP. Thank you! 🙂

Literacy:  Non-Fiction

We have been learning about non-fiction texts in class.

Non-fiction texts can be divided into six main types:

• information texts – non-fiction books, information leaflets, catalogues, magazine articles,
• recount texts – personal story, biographies, autobiographies, diary, experiment, retelling events, newspaper articles.
• instruction texts – step by step guides, recipes, How to…, activity instructions, science investigations.
• explanation texts – e.g. What causes a tsunami? What causes the seasons? How does the moon affect the tides?
• persuasion texts – adverts, answers to questions, leaflets, brochures, posters, letters to persuade someone to listen to your view i.e. writing to a local shop to persuade them to stock more Fair Trade products.
• argument texts – debates i.e. should we..? Should children wear a school uniform? Should dogs be kept on the lead in public places?

 

Features of Non – Fiction Texts (Not all features will be in all types of non-fiction text)

Task: Select a non-fiction text at home, from the class library, or from your local library.  Read it, write the title and author in your jotter and complete at least 2 of the following tasks:

• Write down 5-10 interesting facts that you have found out in your reading.
• Choose your favourite section from your text and summarise the main points.
• Draw a diagram of something mentioned in your text and label it with relevant information.
• Find 5-10 technical words that you don’t know and write your own glossary to explain what they mean. Use a dictionary to help you.
• Write a list of features of your non-fiction text. Does it have a contents? How many features can you find?
• Make a poster, leaflet or pamphlet which illustrates and summarises the main points of your chosen text.

 

Maths

We have been learning that division is just the inverse, or opposite, of multiplication. So, for example, if we know that 5 X 6 = 30, then we also know that 30 ÷ 6 = 5.

Recently, Primary 5 were asked to design our new garden plot.  We took the best ideas and combined them to create our garden. We’re really proud of how well it turned out!

Wow what a day! Primary 5 had a blast at sports day today and are now thoroughly exhausted! I couldn’t think of a better introduction to health week (beginning Monday) 🏃‍♀️🍎🏃‍♂️

 

Last week, there was lots of great effort put into our homework; I was very impressed by how well some of your handwriting is progressing and the amazing effort that some of you put into your newspaper articles on the 2011 Japanese Tsunami – they were fascinating! Your homework tasks for this week are as follows:

Literacy

Task: Up-Levelling sentences.

Up-level the following sentences:

1. The dog found a bone.
2. The horse jumped over a fence.
3. The ball went into the net.
4. The cat climbed up the tree.
5. The girl danced.
6. The boy smiled.

Success criteria:

Punctuation – please use a variety and check over

Openers – to start each sentence using order words (Then, Next, Secondly, Finally etc.)

Vocabulary – adjectives to describe, alliteration, adverbs and similes

Connectives – to join two sentences to make one longer detailed sentence

Other

Today, we were visited by two ladies from The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (or RZSS or short!) who were teaching us all about our wildlife in Scotland, and the threats that they face. We learned that there are 6 main threats to wildlife;

1. Habitat Loss
2. Pollution
3. Live Capture
4. Natural Disasters
5. Invaders
6. Over Hunting.

Task 1: Pledge cards

Write down one behaviour that you will change to help protect the environment. Discuss why you have chosen that particular behaviour and how it will help wildlife or the environment.

Optional: Produce a leaflet/poster encouraging other people to take part too.

Task 2: Our end of year show is fast approaching us and so I ask that you all practise your songs as much as possible!  Primary 5’s songs are Relight My Fire (Take That) and Just Like Fire (Pink).

This afternoon we had the chance to test out our structures that we built yesterday. Interestingly, we discovered that the strongest buildings were made using triangles.  Cubed buildings were less successful  and tended to collapse during the ‘earthquake’.  We certainly enjoyed testing out our structures…and the leftover jelly!

We have a class of budding engineers today!  Through our Japan topic, we have been learning all about earthquakes as, unfortunately, we discovered that Japan lies on top of many fault lines, and so experiences many earthquakes.  Today, we learned that Japanese engineers have sought to design earthquake resistant houses and buildings, so as to minimise the destruction that earthquakes can cause. We began to design our own earthquake resistant structures that we will test out tomorrow!

Topic:

This week, we have been learning about why Japan suffers from so many earthquakes. Research a time when an earthquake occurred and write a short newspaper article describing what happened. (This can be an earthquake that happened in Japan, or anywhere else).
