Here is the link to Mrs McMillan’s YouTube channel. It has some  strategies you could use if you are feeling worried or a bit anxious – Take a moment with Mrs McMillan

Blending Wednesdays

Ocean Jokes: Ahoy Matey! | Best funny jokes, Corny jokes, Funny ...

Today we are going to learn about letter blends. Learning letter blends helps us to read and write.
Each letter within the blend is said individually, but quickly, so they ‘blend‘ together. bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fr, tr, fl, gl, gr, pl, pr, sl, sm, sp and st are all examples of blends.

Warm Up:

  • Watch this video and read along with the blends

  • Can you read all the letter blends below? Remember to say each sound quickly so they ‘blend’ together!

Teaching Blends and Digraphs - Make Take & Teach

Main Activity:

  • Write down the words from the sheet by adding the correct letter blend to the beginning of the word. Remember there will be 2 sounds. Can you hear them both?
  • If you would like to, you can draw a picture next to your word

Phonics Initial Consonant Blends Worksheets

Extra Challenge:

  • Try writing out the words from the sheet above in capital letters as well as lowercase letters e.g. glasses GLASSES

Game to Support Learning:

  • This is a great game to learn about letter blends BUT it needs flash player so might not work on all devices –click here to try it.

Subtraction Wednesday

101 Silly Math Jokes and Puns to Make Students Laugh Like CrazyToday is our day we do some work on our subtraction skills.

Warm Up:

  • Go on a number hunt around the house and find as many numbers as you can – when you find a number, take away 1 from it e.g. if you find the number 16, take away 1 and your answer is 15
  • Remember – when you take away 1 you just go to the number before
  • What is the biggest number you can find? I managed to find the number 100 in a book so I took 1 away and wrote down 99. Can you beat me and find an even bigger number?

Main Activity:

Primary 1 Worksheet
  • Write down your subtraction sums in your jotter and then answer them
  • If you find it easier, you can draw the pictures to help you solve each problem – cross out the amount to take away, then count how many are left

  • Lots of words tell you to take away e.g. subtract, minus, the difference between, less than, how many are left?
