New video for learners- Studying for SQA Qualifications Using SCHOLAR We are delighted to announce the release of our latest support video for learners. This new resource, “[ http://bit.ly/StudyWithSCHOLAR ]Studying for SQA Qualifications Using SCHOLAR”, has been created to show learners how to use SCHOLAR in their studies as they work towards a National 5, Higher or Advanced Higher qualification. The video is suitable for learners with no prior experience of SCHOLAR, but may also be of benefit to students with summative assessments or exams approaching who may wish to use the interactive course materials and automatically marked, end of topic and end of unit assessments for consolidation and revision.

Our new video is available at  http://bit.ly/StudyWithSCHOLAR

S3 Chemists

This week we are continuing with Ionic bonding, all of the resources are in the week 9 folder of your Team, and I would like you to complete the following tasks.

  • Watch the recorded PowerPoint which looks at how to write ionic formula and the structure of ionic compounds and complete the tasks in the PowerPoint.
  • Attend the 2 live sessions. The first one is tomorrow at 9.45am and will be a live lesson and then the second one is on Thursday at 9am and will be a tutorial. These will take place on the S3 Chemistry Live Lessons Team.
  • Your assignment this week will be a homework exercise that we will ask you to submit so that we can see your working and correct any mistakes. I will post this on Wednesday morning with more details of what we want you to do.

Remember if you need anything, we are here to help! 🙂

S3 Chemists

A reminder of the work that has to be completed this week. All documents can be found on your class Team.

  1. Watch the recorded PowerPoint (mp4) on forming ions. This has less slides than the main PowerPoint so after watching this please then access the PowerPoint and complete all tasks within this. There are a few video’s to watch, some notes to copy and some examples to try.
  2. Attend the live sessions. I will be holding 2 sessions this week (from your feedback I have adapted the times to make sue that they don’t clash with other subjects)
    • Tuesday @9.45am – this will be a live lesson and I will go through how Ions are formed
    • Thursday @9am – This will be a tutorial. I will have some examples for us to work through and also there will be a chance for you to ask any questions.
  3. Complete homework exercise 4 by Thursday this week as I will spend some time at the tutorial going over these answers and will also post the answers on the Team after this.
  4. Complete the quiz – once again this will be posted as an assignment that your teacher will give you feedback on. I will post this after the tutorial on Thursday, so you have time to complete it by the end of the week.

Perseverance rover landing on Mars – LIVE from NASA’s feed

This Thursday The Royal Society of Chemistry will be streaming the Perseverance rover landing on Mars – LIVE from NASA’s feed (we have their approval in writing which is pretty insane. :)) – in collaboration with the UK Space Agency.

You can stream it live on our TikTok channel tomorrow (18th February) at 20:15:  https://www.tiktok.com/@royalsocietyofchemistry (you can view it on desktop, the app is not mandatory).

The actual landing is predicted to be at 20:55, but it can happen earlier or later – it is over 200 million miles away so who knows how accurate this prediction is!:)

The mission is searching for signs of ancient life on Mars which involves a lot of chemistry of course – including collecting and analysing samples of rock and regolith that will be coming back only in 2031.

As well as leading the search for alien life on the red planet, Perseverance will test out a new instrument, Moxie, that aims to convert the Martian air into oxygen.

S3 Chemists

I hope you have all had a lovely long weekend and have been enjoying playing in the snow. As we only have 2 days left this week we will be focusing on consolidating what we have learned so far about Covalent Bonding. I have made 4 short recorded lessons for you to watch on everything we have learned so far and these can be found in Teams. The tasks I would like you to complete this week are;

  1. Watch the 4 recorded lessons on Covalent Bonding and complete any suggested activities. These can be found in the files section of your class Team under week 5.
  2. Complete the assignment task on Teams
  3. Attend the drop-in tutorial session if you are struggling with covalent bonding or if you would just like more practice this will take place at 9.45am Thursday 11/2/21.

S3 Chemists – Week 3

Good morning S3, I hope you all managed to have a nice relaxing weekend and are ready to start week 3 of home learning.

We will be continuing with covalent bonding this week and I would like you to complete the following tasks by the end of the week;

  • Work your way through the two PowerPoint presentations taking notes in your jotter and completing any tasks given. The first PowerPoint is on revision from the previous weeks work and the second is looking at the properties of covalent bonding (new work).
  • Attend the live lessons. I will be holding 2 live sessions this week. The first one is on Tuesday Period 2 and I will be doing a revision lesson on how covalent bonds are formed as some people are still struggling with this. The second session will be on Friday Period 2 and this will be a tutorial session with a summary of what we have covered and a chance for you to ask me any questions from this weeks work.
  • Complete the assignment – I will be setting a quiz again on Friday using the assignment feature in teams for you to complete. Your teacher will mark these and provide you with feedback. This will allow us to check your understanding of the topic.

Scholar N5 Biology Sessions

Scholar are running online tutor sessions for the N5 Biology course which are free to access. I would strongly encourage all N5 pupils to tune in to these at the times shown below.

Thursday 11/02/21 @ 6pm – Cell Biology

Thursday 25/02/21 @ 6pm – Multicellular organisms

Thursday 11/03/21 @ 6pm – Life on Earth

Scholar online N5 Chemistry sessions

Scholar are running online tutor sessions for the N5 Chemistry course which are free to access. I would strongly encourage all N5 pupils to tune in to these at the times shown below. These sessions will be delivered by a Chemistry teacher and you will have the opportunity to ask questions.

AH Physics

This week the AH class is working on Topic 9 ‘Polarisation’, the final topic of Unit 2 ‘Quanta and Waves’. It is hoped to start the final unit of the course ‘Electromagnetism’ next week. Hard copies of Electromagnetism Summary Notes, Tutorial Questions, Solutions to Tutorial Questions and the Scholar Study Guide will be posted to pupils by the end of this week. The Waves Topic Test and the Quanta and Waves Unit Test will be carried out during the next two or three weeks. Directed Revision Guides for both will be sent pupils a few days before they sit the tests.
