St. Stephen’s Primary is an active participant in the Junior Road Safety scheme.
For many years we have carried out a fantastic array of activities aimed at raising awareness of road safety in our community. Our Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO), supported and advised brilliantly by Mrs. Davies, lead our school in competitions, lessons and workshops in a bid to ensure our pupils know how to stay safe on or near roads.
Every year we have two Junior Road Safety Officers, chosen from P6 and P7 applicants. Our officers have organised monthly events such as visits from Speeding Ted and JRSO mascot Ziggy the Alien, poster competitions and even won the Walk to School month prize for the best event thanks to a visit from truck company Gist. Children have also participated in JRSO Days, carried out traffic surveys, made ‘traffic light’ fruit cocktails and played various active games all based around road safety.
St. Stephen’s road safety scheme has been so successful that we have finished in the top three of North Lanarkshire Council’s annual JRSO competition and, in 2013/14 we were named overall winners and Team of the Year!
For school year 2014/15 St. Stephen’s Primary won Team of the Year again and finished runners-up in the JRSO campaign of the year competition!
