Enrolment/Transition

Every year, we are delighted to welcome our new P1s into the St. Stephen’s community.

NEW ENTRANTS

Registration of new entrants takes place in mid-January each year, usually the second week back after the Christmas holidays. Pupils resident within the school catchment area, whose fifth birthday falls between 1st March of the current school year and the last day of February of the following school year, will automatically be admitted into school. Details of registration will appear in the national and local press.

SCHOOL TOURS

Staff at school are always happy to show prospective parents around the school. Please feel free to telephone the office to make an appointment.

ENROLMENT

You should bring your child’s Birth Certificate when you come to enrol them Please also bring their Baptismal Certificate if one is available. Proof of residence is also required eg. a utility bill or rent book etc.

GETTING TO KNOW US

At the time of enrolment, parents are informed about a series of meetings whereby the children are invited into school before August to meet their teachers. Parents are invited into school to be given an introduction to language and maths work.

BUDDIES

Our new pupils will also meet their new buddies before they start P1. Buddies are pupils from P7 or P6 who will take responsibility for looking after the new children. They help them learn the school routines and make new friends, look after them in the playground and assist them before 9am and at home time.

ENROLMENT OF CHILDREN DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR

Parents seeking a place for their child in the school are asked to contact the Headteacher so that a visit can be arranged at a mutually convenient time. If the child lives outside the catchment area a placing request must be made.

MOVING TO ANOTHER SCHOOL

If parents want their child to go to another school, they must enrol in the first instance with their local school and ask for an information leaflet that provides details on how to make a placing request.

TRANSITION

The secondary school to which pupils from St. Stephen’s Primary normally transfer to is St. Andrew’s High School.

The transition process begins in P6 with pupils visiting St. Andrew’s High School for a tour and to take part in some sample lessons. In P7, pupils will visit the secondary to enjoy further activities and will receive newsletters. Children will also receive any necessary support and guidance from St. Stephen’s Primary staff prior to their move.
