Tuesday 22nd May

Hello from Primary 6/7,

We were lucky enough to be visited by Mrs Walker, Mrs Boyle and Miss Gilchrist from the science department at St Ambrose. The children all enjoyed their ‘investigating science’ experience where they learned about chemical reactions. We took part in our own experiments and saw what type of reaction occurred. We also studied different solutions and investigated whether these were acids, alkalis or neutral. We also learned about PH ranges. We thoroughly enjoyed our workshop and we are looking forward to our next visit next Tuesday.

Eco Update: Garden Preparation

As it was a lovely sunny day today, P3/4 and P4/5 took on the role of Eco Gardeners!

They were out this afternoon picking up litter, weeding out the pots, and sweeping up soil in preparation for some nice new plants and flowers.

It is our hope that we can create a beautiful outdoor learning area that is also wildlife friendly!

We hope to be out planting next week, so check back here to see our progress!

Budgeting in P4/5

P4/5 took part in a money workshop where they learned the importance of budgeting.

They took part in practical activities where they had to count up how much many they had,and decide if they could afford to buy items on a shopping list.

They also got to take part in some interactive quizzes where they were able to show off how much they had learned!

It was a really great experience , and got us all thinking about how we spend our money.

Friday 18th May 2018

Hello from Primary One!

This week, Primary One have been learning all about tally marks and carroll diagrams. The children worked very well with their partners to make a tally chart after sorting coloured blocks and were able to sort items on a carroll diagram using ICT.

Primary One enjoyed an interactive performance of The Wind In The Willows and had great fun learning how to be a circus performer and juggle, jump through hoops and walk the tightrope.

The children are working towards the end of their sounds, spelling and numeracy  and have made great progress to date.

Well done, Primary One!

Truck Safety

Today we have been visited by TACS (Truck and Child Safety). This visit was very informative and gave us lots of good information about staying safe on the roads, particularly around trucks and large vehicles. We learned about the blind spots on a large truck and made us aware how dangerous these can be. It will definitely make us think twice about our safety on the roads.

Debating Skills

This afternoon we have been learning to develop our debating skills. We have linked this to our topic Divided City. We have been creating arguments for and against an issue. We have used the internet to research arguments and counter arguments to different questions and we will present these in a debate in class. The issues that are being discussed are very relevant in the text we are reading and in our society today.

Eco News: Visit from Scottish Water

Scottish Water visited our school today to teach us all about where our water comes from, and the responsibility we have to keep our water cycle running smoothly.

We learned how we can help in our own bathrooms by following the Three P’s rule: only flush pee, poo and toilet paper.

Everything else should go in the bin, not down the toilet. We learned flushing certain items can block our drains.

Items we should never flush include:

  • all wipes (baby, toilet and household cleaning) – even if the pack says ‘flushable’
  • cotton wool, cotton buds, disposable nappies and nappy liners.
  • used bandages and contact lenses.

During the assembly we were able to take part in some practical experiments which showed us how paper breaks down in water, but baby wipes do not.

It was a very thought provoking assembly!
