Dear Parent/Guardian,

I hope you had a wonderful October week! It was lovely to see all of you at parents evening and I am very grateful for all of your continued support. The following is a brief outline of the work which we will be undertaking within the class during this term in Primary 3.

Literacy

The children will continue to follow the North Lanarkshire Active Literacy Programme in spelling and phonics. They will learn a new sound and a different set of common words each week and this will be consolidated through class work and homework. The Buzz group will focus on ‘ea’, ‘wa’, ‘th’, ‘ie’, ‘ve’ and ‘g’ and the Woody group will focus on ‘ ee’, ‘oo’, ‘ck’, ‘ai’,’oi’ and ‘oa’. As part of the reading programme the children will read a book each week and will have associated writing tasks in class to develop their understanding.. It is important that the children bring their books into school daily to ensure they are able to use them to carry out their tasks. Within Big Writing the children will explore the features of the following genres; narrative and instructional writing. In addition to this, children will perform a show and tell presentation as part of their talking and listening.

Numeracy

This term the children will learn about subtraction, where they will look at the standard written method and mental strategies for subtraction. Children will also be learning about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. Primary 3 will also focus on measure this term, looking at length and area. As well as learning about symmetry. In addition, children will also learn about money this term.

Religious Education

During Religious Education the children will learn about the month of November and will learn to stay the Eternal Rest. Children will also learn about The Priest and Parish, they will learn about the community of the Church and the symbols that are used within the Church. In addition to this, Primary 3 will be learning about Advent, where they will look at the birth of Jesus Christ and the importance of his birth.

Health and Wellbeing

In P.E. the children benefit from training with Student Sports Coaches. Where they will be learning a variety of skills.  It is very important that your child takes their P.E kit to school on the days in which they have P.E, which is Wednesday and Friday.. All kits should be clearly labelled, so that it can be easily identified. During Health, children will be learning about how to keep their bodies healthy through food and exercise.

Social Subjects

This terms IDL (Inter-disciplinary Learning) theme is ‘It’s A Bug’s Life’.  The children will learn to describe features of their local landscape, categorise minibeasts, identify a variety of food chains and Identify and name a variety of mini-beasts. We also can’t wait to build a ‘Bug Hotel’ for Bertie the Beetle!

Finally thanks again for your continued support and please do not hesitate to contact me concerning your child’s learning.

Kind Regards,

Miss Paterson
