November 2019

Dear Parent/Guardian

I hope you all had a lovely break over the October week. We are already working hard and are excited about the fun events which will be taking place this term. We will be very busy preparing for our St. Andrew’s Day performance and the Carol Service. This is a brief outline of the work which we will be undertaking within the class during the second term.

Literacy

The children will continue to follow the North Lanarkshire Active Literacy Programme in spelling and phonics. They will learn phoneme families (sh and ch), spelling rules (an introduction to prefixes and suffixes), common words and tricky words which will be consolidated through class work and homework. The children will be reading a novel and also working on poetry this term. As part of the reading programme the children will continue to develop their use of the reading strategies whilst reading their novel and working on poetry. Within Big Writing the children will continue to develop their use of vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation (V.C.O.P.) within the genres of narrative and poetry.

Numeracy

In Primary 5 the children will develop their understanding of 2D Shape and 3D Objects (recognise 3D objects and their properties), Money (calculations of money, use of money within the world and money word problems), Time (telling the time, durations, using timetables and calendars), Fractions, Decimals and Percentages and Decimal Fractions this term. The children will participate in Active Maths, partner work and written tasks.

Religious Education

During the second term the learning will focus on November (Scottish Faith Heritage and the Faithful Departed) and The Life of Jesus (Healer, Teacher and Jesus’ time on earth). We will also be learning about Advent (signs, symbols and themes of Advent).

Health and Wellbeing

In P.E. the children will be developing their skills within Rugby and Football; sending, receiving, co-operating and competing). For Dance we will be using Scottish Country Dancing and party dances as our stimulus. As part of the Health and Wellbeing programme the children be learning about how they record their achievements in school through Seesaw and how their achievements are celebrated outside of school. The children will be learning about the importance of feeling included and including others using Christmas as our stimulus for learning.

Interdisciplinary Learning

This term our topic has been named ‘Give a Smile for Christmas’. The children will be learning how different groups within our community have a range of needs and how those needs are met. We will be organising an enterprise activity to raise funds to enable us to give a smile to a member of our community; by a giving a small gift. As a class we will be visiting Netherton Care home, on three occasions, to spend time with some of the residents. The children will engage in conversation and sing a selection of Christmas songs for the residents.

Science

We will be learning about sound (animal communication and vibrations) and light (reflection, shadows and the properties of light). Additionally we will be learning about the structure and function of the sensory organs and how we respond to these.

Thank you in advance for your support this term, please use your child’s homework diary to communicate any concerns/comments.

Kind Regards,

Mrs Debbie Ferns
