I have set you some tasks to do on Studyladder to practise your phonemes and common words so login and have a go!

SPLAT – Today I would like you to write your common words in chalk outside. Ask someone to call a word out and once you find the word SPLAT it with a water balloon. If you don’t have any water balloons you could use a nerf gun or jump on the word or colour it in.  You can do this with as many of your common words as you can.

Yesterday you kick started your maths work by practising the days of the week and months of the year. Today we are going to focus on the Seasons.

How many seasons are there?

There are 4 seasons. The four seasons — winter, spring, summer, autumn.

It is important that you can name the seasons and their characteristics.

How did you get on yesterday with reading the calendar? It is a very important skill that you will use throughout your lives, especially when you are a grown up.

I like to mark important dates on my calendar. First I always like to put in peoples’ birthdays so I do not forget. I also add in any holidays I have planned and any appointments I need to go to.

Calendars are very useful! Keep practising reading the calendar in your house.

Round the clock ⏰ 

Yesterday you were learning about clocks!

You now know that  a clock is a device that tells the time.

How many different types of clocks did you find in your house?

Today you are going to learn even more about the analogue clock.

Before you can tell the time, it is important that you learn all about the different parts of the analogue clock.

Let’s learn about the analogue clock with Jack Hartmann.

Here is a picture of an analogue clock:

An analogue clock is a circular-faced clock.

There are twelve numbers on a clock. As you can see the numbers one to twelve are around the outside of the clock. These numbers represent the hour.

The clock has two hands. Can you notice the difference in their size?

The hour hand is the short hand.

The long hand is used to measure minutes.

Here is a little song to help you remember the difference between  the short hand and long hand on a clock.

Now that you know about the main parts of a clock, it’s time to make your own!

Today I challenge you to make your very own clock face! ⏰ 

There are lots of different ways you can do this. Let’s get creative!

First you will need to find something that is a circular shape and draw around it. This could be a lid or plate.

Write the number 12 at the top and the number 6 at the bottom of the circle. Can you write in the rest of the clock face numbers?

Now put a dot in the centre of your circle. Well done! Now you have a clock face.

What else do we need? 2 hands!

Can you find 2 things that could be the hands of the clock? You could use spoons, pencils or straws but remember, one has  to be longer than the other.

We have all been enjoying the lovely sunny weather recently and it has been great to be able to get outside and play.  Even though it is important for everyone to enjoy the sun we have got to remember that it can burn your skin. There are three important steps to stop sunburn:

• Cover up with clothing and a hat
• Spend time in the shade,
• Wear suitable sunscreen and apply it often

In the attached sheet the character in it is out in the sun with no hat!!!  I would like you to design a hat for the character and make sure it offers suitable protection against the sun.

When we pray it is important to remember a few simple things.  Prayers can be simple thoughts and words coming straight from the heart.  Sometimes God doesn’t seem to give us what we pray for.  Do not give up praying – keep on talking to God and listening for he knows what is best for you, even if it is not what you expected.  It is also important to remember that we don’t just ask God for things we want.  Remember to praise God and thank him for his goodness, to tell him about ourselves and others and say sorry if we have done wrong.

Today we are going to learn three new common words, they are – old, do, going

These three words are tricky words, we can’t sound them out so we have to think of strategies to remember them.

old – the o in this word is not the letter sound but the letter name ‘o’ then we can sound out l,d.

do  – the o in this word makes the ‘oo’ sound – d-oo.

going – you can already read and write the word go and you add i n g to make going.

I would like you to write these words three times each into your jotter and make up your own sentence for each word.

Reading – I have assigned you a new book on Scholastic to read aloud to someone at home.  I was so happy to hear Eryn reading her books aloud last week, it was amazing! Perhaps some more of you could record yourselves this week to let me hear you.

A calendar is very useful, it helps us learn about the passing of time along with the months of the year and their order.

A calendar is a series of pages that shows the days, weeks, and months of a particular year. It is a tool we use to help us keep track of each day, and it allows us to visually see when different events will happen.

Learning to read a calendar is an important maths skill.

I have included a page from a calendar below:

This is the first page of the calendar because January is the first month of the year.

Look carefully at the calendar. Along the top we have the days of the  week and then below, it shows you how many days are in that specific month. There are 31 days in January.

Can you see that on the 8th of January I went to visit puppies.

What day of the week was this? Look at the days of the week at the top, it was a Wednesday.

Now let’s see if  you can practise reading the calendar. Here are some questions for you:

2. What date did I go and visit my Grandma?

3. What day of the week did I visit the dentist?

I hope you enjoyed sport’s day yesterday and had plenty of fun!  I would like you to keep having fun whilst exercising.  Research shows that regular exercise has lots of benefits including:

• Encouraging a better night’s sleep

RE – When Jesus needed to feel very close to his Father, what did he do? – He would pray.  Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, before he was betrayed by Judas.  He prayed before he raised Lazarus from the dead and Jesus prayed during the Last Supper, before he broke the bread.  Like us Jesus needed to share his worries and problems with his heavenly Father; he knew that he was never alone.  Just as we are never alone.  God is always with us.

When we pray we are having a conversation with God.  When we talk to God, he listens.  We don’t have to have special times for saying prayers.  Often we say them at bedtime but we can talk to God at any time.  Do you ever feel unsure about what to say to God?  Don’t worry as God our Father likes to hear about everything we have to tell him and he is always ready to listen.

The apostles knew how important it was to pray to God but like us they often felt uncertain about how to pray.  One day they asked Jesus to teach them how to pray.  What was the prayer that Jesus taught them? – The Our Father.

Good morning boys and girls. I hope that you enjoyed the sunshine yesterday and got some time to play in your gardens. We had our paddling pool out again.😁🌞

Today is Ascension Thursday!

We have been thinking about loving and caring for others all week and we have tried to follow Jesus’ commandment to, ‘Love one another as I have loved you.’

You have created a Caring Wreath to show that you care and you have learned about how Jesus ascended into heaven forty days after his resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Normally on Ascension Thursday we would all be going to Mass. Although we can’t actually go to church today, Bishop Toal is celebrating Mass for all of the children of the Diocese of Motherwell at 11am.

HWB- Let’s begin with some exercise to get your minds active. I know that you all enjoy Cosmic Kids Yoga so I’d like you to give this one a try, it’s about Coco the butterfly. Have you spotted any butterflies on your daily walks? I have seen lots of different types.

Literacy – This weeks phoneme was a tricky one, ‘ph’. How many ‘ph’ words can you remember? Draw some pictures of the words that you can think of with the ‘ph’ sound in them.

RE– We remember Mary, the mother of Jesus and our mother. Let’s say a Hail Mary and remember all of the people who are sick and in hospital. In my house we have made so many things from boxes: cars, trains, pirate ships, robots, TVs, treehouses.  I’m sure that you can think of loads of other good ideas.  Send me some pictures of your creations, I would love to see them.

Common words – read all of the common words in your word tin to a parent or someone at home. Put them into two piles. The first pile should be all the words that you can read really well and the second pile, the ones that are trickier for you – practise these ones even more this week. On Monday Mrs Connolly asked you to focus on some common words, continue to practise these words using fun spelling.  You can write them in chalk, using play doh, shaving foam, pasta, flower spelling or any fun way you can think of.

This is the 1st of May, a new month.  Usually we would go to mass on the first Friday of the month.  Fr Kenny is live on Facebook at 10am, perhaps your parents would tune in and watch mass with you, this would be a nice way to begin your day.

Literacy – Let’s begin today by revising all of our initial sounds and phonemes.

How did you get on with your alphabet scavenger hunt on Wednesday? I hope that you found an item for most sounds in the alphabet. If you didn’t manage to do this perhaps you can try it today?

RE – This Sunday’s Gospel is about Jesus the Good Shepherd.

This story teaches us that Jesus is always there for us when we need him.  We are like the sheep and Jesus is the Good Shepherd.  Our Good Shepherd loves us and will protect us.  When we have Jesus as our shepherd we are safe.

Remember to say your prayers for everyone in our world who is sick and in need just now.
