It has been a pleasure being your teacher this year and although we didn’t get the full year together in school you all made a big impression!! I am so proud of all your hard work. It was lovely to watch each and every one of you grow in confidence and gel together into the lovely class of bright, smart, helpful and caring boys and girls you have all become – you are a credit to your families and to St Barbara’s.
I hope you have a lovely summer. If we all stick to the rules, it looks like we will all be back at school together again in August! Take care, stay safe and remember to be the best you can be!! Good luck for your new class, you’ll be amazing!!
I’ve attached a little memory to remind us of 2020!!
Good morning boys and girls, can you believe that it’s Friday already and this is the last school day of May. Monday will be a new month.
I hope you were able to enjoy the sunshine and today has to be very warm. Please make sure you take care in the sun. Drink plenty of water and remember to take breaks.
Let’s start the day with our morning prayer 🙏. We could also say a Hail Mary remembering anyone who needs a little prayer.
Literacy 📝📖 🔠
Please continue with the book that has been assigned to you on Scholastics. If you have not been in touch to get your book, please email me on gw09boyceshirley2@glow.sch.uk. Remember boys and girls when reading your book you need to be able to tell someone about what you have read. When we read it is important that you understand what you read. Like we would in class, use a dictionary or ask an adult to explain anything you don’t understand.
A word we have been hearing a lot recently is
LOCKDOWN!!
Use this word to make as many words as you can. Your words need to be at least two letters in length. Try for 15.
The next activity also involves LOCKDOWN, let’s have a treasure hunt in the house or in the garden. Can you find me eight items beginning with each letter in lockdown (this means you need to find two items beginning with ‘O’ – they can’t be the same). Write all your items down or send me a picture.
For the last piece of literacy work today, I would like you to test yourself on the phoneme words you have been working on. Ask someone in your house to test you and if they have time to dictate four sentences. How did you do?
Please choose Level 4, multiplication or division up to 12, choosing a table you have been working on. Choose a 5 second gap or can you challenge yourself with a 3 second gap!! Let me know how you get on.
Today we will continue on our 4 number operations revision. These are addition/subtraction/multiplication/division (+ – x ÷). Will we add, subtract, multiply or divide. Read the questions carefully.
Continue on your work from the textbook from yesterday. I know some people have completed it and if you would like a further exercise just drop me an email.
When you have finished you can choose to play an online maths game of your choice for one of the four operations.
R.E. 🙏
We have been learning how Jesus prayed for his friends and for all of us and how he taught his disciples to pray to our Heavenly Father. We know that saying our prayers is very important. On the accompanying illustration of Jesus praying, draw pictures or write names in the thought bubble of yourselves and some of the other people Jesus was praying for. You could choose your families and friends, as well as our brothers and sisters throughout the world.
Colour your picture in when you have finished writing in the names of your family and friends. Now show someone your picture and tell them how much you love them and that you will remember them in your prayers.
Please send us a copy of your picture at (Teacher’s Glow Email) or Tweet us @St_BarbarasPS
Health and Well-being 🚴♀️💃🕺
It is very important for us to talk about how we are feeling. It is especially important now as some of you may be worried about the changes we have all had to make in the last few months. Talking to someone, exercising and relaxing are all great ways to help your health and wellbeing and keep you feeling happy. Today I would like you to play the lanterns game below where you write down how you are feeling and what has made you feel that way. You will then see your feeling float up into the sky.
Click on whichever video you like or do all three! My favourite is I like to move it 🙂 it certainly gets your heart beating!
Now for some relaxing time. A great way to relax is by doing yoga. Yoga is an ancient form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental well-being. The main components of yoga are postures (a series of movements designed to increase strength and flexibility) and breathing.
Why not send us some pictures of you taking part in any of the exercises you have been doing today. Send to gw09boyceshirley2@glow.sch.uk or Tweet @St_BarbarasPS
What a busy week everyone with the highlight being our virtual sports day!! Well done on all your hard work. 👏⭐️ Have a lovely weekend. Take care and stay safe everyone.
Hi boys and girls, hopefully the sun breaks through the clouds today!! ☀️ 🌞 I have loved watching/seeing all of your Virtual Sports Day activities from Tuesday. Definitely some budding athletes for the future I think!
Let’s start the day with our morning prayer 🙏. We could also say a Hail Mary remembering anyone who needs a little prayer.
Literacy 📝📖 🔠
Choose a starter activity from the link below. Remember to choose one you haven’t already used.
Remember homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings and are spelt differently. Last week we looked at to/too/two because they are very commonly mis-spelled as people use the wrong one. You must ensure that you use the correct word in your writing. We all did very well on the exercise but the hard part now is to remember to apply what you have learned and use the correct word. I’ll be looking very closely at this in your written work. 🔎
Today I would like you to think of pairs/trios of other homophones. Can you list 5? 7? or maybe even 10? Try your hardest and I would love to see your lists. Some are more common than others. Once you have your list I would like you to take 3 of your sets of homophones and show me you understand what each of them mean by using them in a sentence. Remember your core targets and make your sentences as interesting as possible. Remember, too, it must make sense.
Continue to practise your phoneme words if you need to.
Today I have assigned you a reading book 📖 in Scholastics. Please email me and I will send you the information you need to get into your book.
Numeracy🔢
Today we are going to concentrate on our 4 number operations. These are addition/subtraction/multiplication/division (+ – x ÷). If you are given a sum you always have to look at the sign and ensure we carry out the correct operation. If we are given a word problem we have to ensure we read it carefully and ask ourselves what we need to do. Will we add, subtract, multiply or divide.
We are going to be working from our Teejay Textbook today, so I will give you your exercise when you email me about your reading book.
When you have finished you can choose to play an online maths game of your choice for one of the four operations.

We have all been enjoying the lovely sunny weather recently and it has been great to be able to get outside and play. Even though it is important for everyone to enjoy the sun we have got to remember that it can burn your skin. There are three important steps to stop sunburn:
• Cover up with clothing and a hat
• Spend time in the shade,
• Wear suitable sunscreen and apply it often
In the attached sheet the character in it is out in the sun with no hat!!! I would like you to design a hat for the character and make sure it offers suitable protection against the sun.
Please send us your pictures at gw09boyceshirley2@glow.sch.uk or Tweet @St_BarbarasPS

When we pray it is important to remember a few simple things. Prayers can be simple thoughts and words coming straight from the heart. Sometimes God doesn’t seem to give us what we pray for. Do not give up praying – keep on talking to God and listening for he knows what is best for you, even if it is not what you expected. It is also important to remember that we don’t just ask God for things we want. Remember to praise God and thank him for his goodness, to tell him about ourselves and others and say sorry if we have done wrong.
Why not join in with this hymn Alleluia Alleluia Give Thanks to the Risen Lord below to praise God:
I would like you to write out a short prayer thanking God for all the wonderful things you have in your life. I have included a template below for you to use or you can design your own.
Please send us a copy of your prayer at gw09boyceshirley2@glow.sch.uk or Tweet us @St_BarbarasPS.
Also as it is Thursday again let’s remember to thank all NHS workers tonight at 8pm by clapping and making as much noise as you can for them. 👏👏
Remember you can choose an activity from the grid too!
Well boys and girls that’s you finished for the day. I hope you remember all the good advice given in your health and well-being work today about staying safe in the sun. ☀️
Well boys and girls, it’s HAPPY THURSDAY today as we stop our home learning for a little break until Tuesday 26th of May and as you know, from our Health and Well-being posts this week, that is when we will have our Virtual Sports Day. So all you budding athletes, let’s get out there and practise over the weekend. Hopefully the weekend will be as lovely as the weather yesterday. ☀️ 🌞
Let’s begin our day with our Morning Prayer. We will also say a Hail Mary for all NHS staff looking after the people sick in the hospital and all the key workers.🙏

Ascension Thursday: 21st May 2020
Today is Ascension Thursday!
We have been thinking about loving and caring for others all week and we have tried to follow Jesus’ commandment to, ‘Love one another as I have loved you.’
You have created a Caring Wreath to show that you care and you have learned about how Jesus ascended into heaven forty days after his resurrection on Easter Sunday.
Normally on Ascension Thursday we would all be going to Mass. Although we can’t actually go to church today, Bishop Toal is celebrating Mass for all of the children of the Diocese of Motherwell at 11am.
This Mass is being streamed on Facebook so you will need an adult’s permission to watch this:
www.facebook.com/rcmotherwell
Father Campbell is also celebrating Mass on St. Barbara’s Parish website at 10am.
With an adult’s permission, please select a Mass to follow.
You might also like to watch the clip below. You can join in if you like.
Literacy 📝

Today we are going to revisit homophones – that’s a tricky word isn’t it – can you remember what they are? Watch the following link to give yourself a little reminder.
Do you remember now? Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings and are spelt differently. Let’s look at to/too/two this week?
I have attached a worksheet if you have time to complete it. When you complete the worksheet there is no need to print, put it in your jotter, writing the full sentences with the correct homophone to ensure you sentence makes sense.
If we were back in class we would spend around 15 minutes going over our spelling words. If there are any of your phoneme words you are still unsure of, remember to practise them. Take time to use the strategy that works for you. Remember people use different ways to learn new words.
Reading📖
Make sure you read today for at least 10 minutes. Find a quiet time and concentrate really hard on your book. Use a dictionary if you don’t know the meaning of a word. Reading expands your vocabulary and helps you in so many different ways in literacy.
Health and Well-being 🏃🏻♂️
As I reminded you earlier, it’s the last day before the holiday weekend and before Sports’ Day on Tuesday!!!
For some of today’s activities you need dice or you can make some (see below).
Select one or more of the following to do today:
Look out for news about Sports’ Day activities!
Numeracy 🧮🔢
Today is the last day for the Sumdog Contest, so boys and girls there are a few of you still to finish. A great big WELL DONE to Amelie, Jenna, Kyle and Lennon, Mason, Matei and Ronan who have finished their questions, fantastic. 👏👏⭐️⭐️
To start us off for number today we will log on to Sumdog for a wee 15 minute warm up. Try to finish the contest questions if you can.
In ‘Time’ this week you have been working hard revising o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to the hour, with some of you even moving on to digital time, well done! Please finish the exercises set by Mrs Graham yesterday from your Teejay textbook. If you have finished everything and you still have some time remaining for number work, please drop me an email and I will set you your next exercise. You can get me on gw09boyceshirley2@glow.sch.uk. Please try to use this email address as I am having problems with my other one. You should try to email me from your own glow email. You will get the instructions on how to log on from the post dated last Thursday, 14 May, on the blog.
Well boys and girls you have worked really hard and I think you all deserve some golden time. Enjoy and I will be back next Thursday. Bye for now and I’ll be watching what you have been working on until then. Good luck for our first Virtual Sports Day on Tuesday, can’t wait to see your pictures!
Mrs Boyce x🌈🌈
Remember, it’s Thursday, let’s make some noise for our NHS workers tonight at 8.00 pm.
⭐️⭐️Our shining stars⭐️⭐️
A great big well done to all our shining stars so far, I will update it before the end of the day. Keep watching!!
Good morning boys and girls, it’s Wednesday again, you are half way through your week already! You have all been working so hard, well done, I am proud of you 🌟Let’s begin our day with our morning prayer:
God our Father, as we prepare to begin our work, we ask you to help us to use properly the many gifts you have given us, so that we may fully benefit from our day together. St Barbara pray for us.🙏
HWB – Time to waken up and put your best foot forward!
We’re getting closer to Sports’ Day – so time for a little movement. There are two video clips to get you moving and some tasks below. Enjoy!
Now for those tasks:
Play some music lasting about ten/fifteen minutes and do these:
Jumping Jacks/Star Jumps
On the Spot running
Plank
Squats
Add your own and have fun!
Remember to have your water bottle handy and to take a few breaks!
Literacy – I know that you have all been busy bees🐝 working very hard and have learned a new sound. Can you remember what your new phoneme is? That’s correct “ee”. How many “ee” words can you remember? I’m going to give you some clues, can you shout out the answers?
1. I have lots of these in my mouth, they help me chew my food.
2. I am white and fluffy and I live in a field.
3. Plant me in soil and I will grow.
4. I am the colour of grass.
5. I am royal and I wear a crown.
I thought that you might like to watch this little clip from Alphablocks.
Now I would like you to read these words to someone in your family.
Practise these words on your whiteboard or into your jotter.
Remember to use our strategy:
Say the word – teeth
Make the word/break the word – t ee th
Blend the word (push it together) – teeth
Read the word 📖 – teeth
Write the word 🖊- teeth
Common words – had, see, has. Choose a fun way to practise your common words. Why not try them in sand if you have some in your garden. Can anyone remember my favourite ways to write my common words? I sent you some pictures a few weeks ago. Maybe you could send me a picture of your favourite fun spelling practise. I’d love to see them.
Reading – I have assigned you a new book to read on scholastic. I hope that you are enjoying your books. You have been doing so well!
Maths – *SUMDOG* Well done to all the boys and girls who have joined in with the Sumdog competition so far, you are amazing! We only need one more of you to join in and we will make it onto the leader board! Keep working hard P1a, tell your friends too. The more answers you get correct, the more points you get. 3D shape
Let’s see how many 3D shapes you can remember.
3D shape hunt – Can you find any 3D shapes in your house or garden? How many cubes, cones, spheres, cylinders can you find?
RE – This week we have been looking at Jesus’ commandment to:
‘Love one another as I have loved you.’
Jesus showed his love for all of us on Good Friday when he died on the cross. Tomorrow we are going to celebrate the Feast of the Ascension. On this day, forty days after his resurrection on Easter Sunday, Jesus ascended into Heaven leaving the disciples behind to carry on with his work and to be witnesses for him. They were a little scared to be left without Jesus but they believed in him and they knew that he would not leave them alone. They were quite right of course; the Holy Spirit came to help them on the Feast of Pentecost and we’ll explore that later.
Below you will see two very different video clips about the Ascension. Please watch both of them.
Now what I would like you to do is to draw or make your own reminder of what happened on the Feast of the Ascension.
You could think about making the figures of Jesus, his disciples and the two people dressed in white – you could even create your own video clip.
Or you could draw them and write a sentence or a paragraph below; you might want to make a picture using other media – e.g. cotton wool for the clouds.
I have attached some ideas to help you below.
Whatever activity you choose to do, please email it to gw09wallacemarie2@glow.sch.uk or, with an adult’s permission, upload it on to Twitter @St_BarbarasPS.
Happy Friday everyone. Thank you to everyone that got in touch with me from their Glow accounts. Well done!! 👏👏
Let’s start the day with our morning prayer 🙏. We could also say a Hail Mary remembering anyone who needs a little prayer.
Numeracy🔢💻🏆
Today we are going to use our Numeracy time to start the Sumdog competition. Remember that we are competing against all of the schools in North Lanarkshire . So far there are 854 classes entered and during the last competition back in February/March we finished 21st!! Wow!! Let’s see if this time we can be even higher.
The rules of the competition are:
10 people need to play from your class to qualify, we need you all playing boys and girls.
you have until next Thursday at 8.00 pm to answer all of your questions
Remember there are 1000 questions, take your time, read your questions carefully and we will be well on our way to improving our class position. We might even finish highest in the school!! Watch out Primary 7 we are after your top spot from last time, when you finished an amazing 10th!! 👏👏 So here goes boys and girls, your best is all that we ask. 👍
Literacy📝
Test yourself on your common words. Remember to think of all the strategies we know to help us spell challenging words. How did you do?
Today we are going to use our novels for our work. 📚
I would like you to take your favourite book that you have read over Lockdown. I want you to imagine that no one has read this book – it is just about to be published. When a new book is going to be launched the people that print the book use a variety of ways to publicise it. You want to tell everyone about this new amazing book that is about to be launched. Will you design a poster, record a TV ad, write a news paper article; record a news report. You decide!!
Include
the title
the author
fiction/non-fiction
the story line, not giving too much away, you want people to buy your book
the launch date etc
Good luck everyone, I wonder who will persuade me to read their book!!
Health and Well-being 🚴♀️🕺🤾🏼♂️
I hope that you are remember to exercise every day. Here’s a little activity to keep you active on your daily walk.
Art 🎨
Here is a little art activity that you might like to use as you finish off your day. It gives you great ideas to help you draw.
Boys and girls, you have been superstars all week and I have seen some fantastic work. ⭐️🏆Remember these activities are a guide and you should try your best to do what you can. You can also choose an activity from your grid.
A great big thank you to your parents for helping us out so much with your home learning. Take care and have a lovely weekend.
