Room 15 and 16 and their Health Week Update

Rooms 15 and 16 have been busy this week with a wide variety of activities that took place around our Health themed week. They had a visit from SSPCA and Alcohol Awareness. They also enjoyed a highly informative workshop from Child-Line. They were kept active with a programme of activities that involved playing football, bubble football, cricket and self defence classes. Let’s hope the strong messages that were presented all week have left a long and lasting impression.

Health Week Update

Our Health week is proving to be a resounding success with a wealth of visitors who have given the children much to talk about when they go home. Yesterday we had a visit from Frankie and Benny’s who worked with all classes across the school. We also had visits from Childline who delivered talks to Pr.6 and 7 pupils to alert them to the dangers of the internet and cyberbullying. Today our Pr.6 and 7 pupils received talks on alcohol awareness and Pr.1 – 3 received talks on dental hygiene. All stages enjoyed a challenging obstacle course that was set up in the hall on Monday and Thursday afternoon.
Tomorrow we look forward to welcoming Albion Rovers to work with our Pr.4 – 6 pupils. Coatbridge Action for Safe Play will work with Pr.1 -3 and our Pr.7 pupils will be in the hall for Bubble Football!!!
One of our parents, Mrs.Cassidy, carried on the good work of NL Development Officer, Dorothy Anne and worked with our Pr.2 pupils to cook their own Chicken Nugget Happy Healthy Meals. Once again, not a bit was left for Mrs.Docherty!
We look forward to posting a picture gallery to update you on all that has happened.
We would like to take the opportunity to thank parents who have given their time and came along to assist throughout the week. Your support has been greatly appreciated all week.

Artists at Work in Pr.7

Our Pr.7 pupils in Mrs.Murphy’s class have been busy at work creating beautiful pieces of art for our Sunflower Tea next Friday in aid of St.Andrew’s Hospice. Our Pr.1 – 3 pupils are also busy learning songs and poems to entertain our guests in the morning. We look forward to seeing our parents at this lovely event which we hope will be a feature in our school calendar.

Focus on Food

Dorothy Anne Audrey, Focus on Food Curriculum Development Officer, came in to support our Health Week on Tuesday. She delivered small cooking workshops to our primary two children in our kitchen.
They learned about kitchen safety and how to handle small knives. They also made a delicious pasta salad. The smell was delicious and everyone wanted to taste their food. It’s a pity there wasn’t enough to go around as I was waiting patiently but they had eaten the lot!!!

A Visit from Peter of Glasgow Fruit Market

Peter from the Glasgow fruit market came to support our Health Week on Tuesday. He worked with our infant department. He explained the role of a market worker and we were shocked to hear he has been working since 3am and some others start work at 2am in the morning!

He brought along lots of fruit and vegetables from other countries. Everyone did their best to guess where they came from.

Peter brought grapes from Brazil, bananas from South America, Strawberries from Spain, melon from Chilli and lots more interesting fruit and veg like ginger and eggplant.

The children had a quiz with Peter and had to name fruit and vegetables beginning with different sounds! They also had to make a healthy lunchbox.

Peter talked about fruits that grow in warmer countries and stressed the importance of establishing lifelong healthy eating habits.

The children then had the lovely task of tasting the delicious fresh fruit from the market, some children chose to taste fruit that they had never tasted before.

It was a delightful visit enjoyed be all. We would love to welcome Peter back to school and hope he has a long lie soon after all those early mornings!

Health Week

Our Health Week is well underway with all children involved in a full programme of activities and visits. On Monday the school welcomed NLC Nutritionist Michelle McGuiness who did a considerable amount of work with Pr.1 – 5 pupils. Firstly she worked with Pr.4 and Pr.5 to give a 10 mins talk about health eating and healthy food. Children were then encouraged to create their own healthy menu of starter, main meal and dessert which was then collected to assist with a future menu planning meeting. In addition there were food tasters for the children. Our Pr.1 – 3 children were involved in going to a variety of stations around the school hall. As you can see there was plenty to keep everyone involved and hopefully the healthy food and healthy eating message got across to all.
