Dogs Trust Visit Room 1 and 2

Room 1 and 2 had a very exciting visit from Dogs Trust today! Alison from Dogs Trust visited our school today with her own special ‘classroom assistant’ called Alfie. Alfie lives at home with Alison and visits all the schools with her to teach all the boys and girls how to look after a dog.

Alison informed the children about all the fantasic work that the people at Dogs Trust do.

Children learned how to look after a dog: how to groom its hair, give it a bath, pick up its poop and also how to give our dog exercise.

Children learned what a microchip was and how it works. Alfie had a microchip and Hannah used Alison’s special device to check for Alfies chip. The device made a loud beep and showed lots of numbers. When these numbers are put into the computer, they exactly where the dog lives and who its owner is.

The children had a lovely morning with Alfie and were very sad when he had to go and visit another school, he did promise he would come back and visit again soon!

Musical talent on show from Pr.1

There was a lot of mystery taking place around strange events in Room 1 and 2 last week. Class pets Floppy and Spud went on a walkabout and were posted missing for a whole day! Wanted posters and search parties were sent out to find out their whereabouts. They eventually turned up in Mrs.Docherty’s office. They are really mischievous dogs who were up to no good so the boys and girls now know they will have to watch their pets really closely. Some of our Pr.1 pupils made their own delightful song with musical accompaniment to help find their pets! A creative bunch indeed!

Pr.1 Gymnastics!!

Primary one have been learning great skills in gymnastics. They can travel safely along a bench and perform a pencil jump and a star jump. They also had great fun learning to do forward rolls and wanted to let you know how active they have been during their P.E. slots..

Pr.1 in the garden

If you are passing the entrance to the school you will have noticed the great work that has been taking place in the school garden. The whole school is now taking part in maintaining school grounds and a timetable has been drawn up to ensure everyone is involved. This week our two Primary 1 classes were working as a team to address our targets of biodiversity, as part of this they tidied the garden by collecting sticks and stones from the ground. They put them into the wheelbarrow and then used biodiversity challenge cards to work as part of a team and make garden pictures. In teams they made pictures such as: a house, an animal, a car and a person, all from the collected sticks and stones.
Some children also worked with Mrs Chisholm to plant bean plants into the ground. They had been in our greenhouse over the holidays and are growing very tall.
Great work Primary 1!!!!

Pr.1 and their wormeries!!

02042015_114825_0Our Pr.1 pupils were busy during our Eco week creating their own wormery. First they part filled large jars with some stones then added soil and sand before adding some worms from the school garden. Finally they placed leaves at the top of the jars. They spent a week observing the activity of the worms as they took leaves from the top and travelled through the jar. Our Pr.1 pupils are proving to be experts and could talk quite confidently about the important work worms do in our garden. The boys and girls wrote terrific recounts and explanations about their wormery. The boys and girls finally released their worms back into the garden where they will continue to do their great work improving the soil. Great work boys and girls!!

ECO/HEALTH WEEK

Our Primary 1 pupils got our Eco/Health week off to a flying start today with a clean up campaign around our school grounds. As an Eco school we encourage all children to place their litter in the bin or keep it in their pocket. However, over the winter litter has blown into our school grounds and requires the attention of all pupils to tidy up our school. We can look forward to a litter free school this week thanks to the efforts of classes involved in our clean up campaign.

Bike Sheds at Last!!

St.Augustine’s is delighted to announce that it will that at last have bike/scooter racks and a bike shed for securely storing bikes. This will hopefully encourage our children to travel to school on their bikes or scooters safe in the knowledge that they have somewhere safe to store them when they arrive at school. As an Eco school we want to promote a healthier lifestyle and encourage all of our children to walk or cycle to school. Here are a few pictures of our Pr.1 pupils who went out to investigate what the workmen were up to today.CAZcm3tWsAArY89

Cooking in Room 1

Our Primary 1 pupils were busy this morning cooking honey vegetable kebabs.  The beautiful smell of cooking wafted its way along the corridor and made everyone feel quite hungry.  Our little chefs felt quite proud of their achievement and the kebabs tasted delicious!
