Active Maths in Primary 1

Primary one have been very busy since they began school last week. They have been learning about all of the characters in Magic Land, Toy Land and Dinosaur Land and have been learning to count with them.

Some of the Active Maths games they have been playing are; Number line Jigsaws, Magic Numbers, Bowling, Action Cards and making dinner for the characters in our very own class Counting Castle! They have had lots of great fun learning.

Primary one have also been introduced to our Numicon Maths Resource. They used our Numicon Number Lines to make their own number lines using the numicon shapes, this helped them to count independenty along the number line.

A very busy first week in Primary One!

Pr.1 using Technology

Our Pr.1 pupils in Room 2 have been busy in class sending me e-mails to tell me all about their year. They have all received their replies.

Miss Ross said

Primary one have been learning about the world of email and shocked Miss Ross with their knowledge! Some children have already sent and received emails to family members and friends.

Primary one chose to send emails to Mrs Docherty, they decided their own subject and wrote the email very independently. They are familiar with the language of email and can use the mouse to click on the send button. They are also becoming more familiar with a keyboard. Most children are familiar with this through their use of ipads.

Well Done boy and girls in Room 2!!!

Room 1, 2, 3,and 4 go on a Bug Hunt

David, from Bug Life took the classes an adventure last week to find lots of bugs in our local area and raise the awareness of meadows for our invertebrates and other wildlife.

The children found snails, butterflies, beetles, worms, bees, spiders, earwigs, ants and caterpillars. They even saw bunny rabbits too! The children had a look at the bugs in the bug catchers then put them gently back in their home.

The children told David about our work on Mini Beasts and showed him our very own Bug Hotel in our school garden, he was very impressed!

Everyone had fabulous fun in the sun!

Gaden Club Outing – Coatbridge Allotments

Yesterday our keen gardeners thoroughly enjoyed a visit to Blairhill Allotments. It was a lovely day and the children learned lots of new things and saw lots of interesting ideas that we can use in our school garden.
Here are some of the activities the children enjoyed –
We saw lots of recycled items being used in the allotments such as – old yoghurt tubs being used for plant pots, pallets used for planting displays, old railway sleepers used for raised beds and growing plants in unusual items like a bath.
We played a guessing game where we had to match the seed to the vegetable.
We saw compost heaps and discussed why gardens need worms.
We saw how a water butt works.
We noticed that some gardeners had planted flowers beside their vegetables to attract bees and butterflies.
A great time was had by all.
A big thank you to Vivien and Kate for organising the visit and activities.

Science in Pr.1

Our  Primary 1 Scientists have been busy at work

  • Let’s Investigate – Squeaky Clean
  • We are learning what is the best liquid for cleaning.
  • Success Criteria
  • I can talk about liquids that clean (detergents)
  • I can give my own experiences of a cleaning liquid such as: washing up liquid, shampoo or bubble bath.
  • I can help to plan for the investigation, changing only one variable.
  • I can make my guess.
  • I can observe and record the changes.
  • I can talk about the result and make my conclusions.
  • We needed 3 bottles, water and 3 detergents
  • We put the same amount of water into 3 bottles of the same size.
  • We put the same amount of liquid into the three bottles but we changed the type of liquid.
  • We used – washing up liquid, Shampoo and Bubble Bath
  • We made our prediction.
  • We shook the bottles to make bubbles.
  • We observed and measured the height of the bubbles.
  • We recorded the results and made our conclusions.

We noted that the washing up liquid produced the most bubbles and was the strongest detergent.

Tesco Visits

This week and last week classes have been very busy visiting Tesco as part of their Farm to Fork initiative.  The children have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and came back enthused after their trip.  It was wonderful that the sun was shining to make the short walk to Tesco and most enjoyable one.  Many thanks to all the parent helpers who assisted on the various visits.  Your support is most appreciated.
