Pr. 1- 3 Literacy Assembly

As promised we have pictures that capture the Literacy Assembly that took place on Friday.  Parents were informed of the week long activities that took place across the school and also got a chance to listen to some authors and illustrators who shared their stories.  All budding authors of the future.  At the end of the assembly parents and grandparents got the opportunity to read the wonderful stories that were on display around the hall. A fabulous week!!

Literacy Assembly Pr. 4 – 7

On Friday we continued our celebration of World Book Day.  After our attendance at First Friday Mass the boys and girls changed into their costumes that were based upon characters from the world of fiction.  It really was fantastic to see such a great response from pupils across the school.  Our Friday morning assembly involved the pupils of Pr. 4 – 7 who listened to a recap of the weeks events and then had a parade in their costumes.  We look forward to next week when the boys and girls across the school share the books they have written themselves in class.  We also have timetabled slots to visit the book fair.  A busy week ahead as always at St.Augustine’s.  As son as we have pictures of the Pr.1 – 3 assembly we will post them on the blog.

Pyjama Themed Readathon

Believe it or not but the school hall was a scene of tranquility as classes arrived for their Readathon to celebrate World Book Day.  Everyone arrived suitably dressed in the finest pyjamas and onesies, blanket in hand and cushion to settle themselves down for a good old read.  The pyjama theme continued into the afternoon when the children enjoyed a movie of their choice that was inspired by a well know children’s book.  Everyone is looking forward to dress up day tomorrow when everyone is encouraged to dress up as a character from fiction.  Our afternoon assembly is for Pr.1 – 3 children and parents are invited to join us at 2.00pm.

Literacy Week in Room 6

Here are some photos of the children in Room 6 enjoying Literacy Week activities. The pupils created a story board for their very own Fairytale. Having explored the key features of Traditional Tales, they were given the choice of retelling a favourite one in their own words or creating an imaginative storyline. They worked wth partners to asess, proof read and check each others’ work. They watched Francesca Simon, the author of the Horrid Henry stories, on line and listened to her inspiration, ideas and how she works closely with her illustrator -Tony Ross to create a first draft, then a second before it is sent to the publishers. The class then redrafted and illustrated their stories. Next it was time to design a front cover and think about a brief “blurb” for the back. When they were happy with their work it was sent to the publishers i.e. the Classroom Assistants! Who busily and carefully put the books together. The children are now looking forward to sharing them with their audience.
Also during the week the pupils Pair Read, went on a Word Scavenger Hunt, took part in the School Readathon in their PJs, listened to a Storyteller and watched a DVD of Matilda by Roald Dahl. They were heard saying they “had the best time ever”.
We are looking forward to dressing as story characters and presenting with school friends at the Literacy Assembly to round off a fab week. Truly inspiring!
