What is the St Ambrose HS Sport Leader Academy?

The sport leader academy is a programme designed to facilitate and encourage leadership through physical recreation and sporting activity in St Ambrose HS and the local community.  IT will also provide a pathway for pupils to progress from S4 to S6 developing leadership skills and experience as well as attaining awards from North Lanarkshire Council and Sport Leader UK, all through physical activity and sport.  As such, the Sport Leader Academy members (SLAMr’s) have the responsibility of encouraging peers and younger pupils in the school and wider community to become involved in a physically active healthy lifestyle.

Aims of the Sport Leader Academy

The sport leader academy is run by the PE department and Active Schools Coordinator.  The main aims of the programme are below:

  • Develop the young workforce: skills of pupils, e.g. problem solving, communication, team work and creativity.
  • Create opportunities for academy members e.g. coaching courses, first aid, child protection etc., which will enhance employability.
  • Create links with the local community including primary schools and local clubs.
  • Develop the extra-curricular programme within the school creating additional opportunities for pupils.
  • Enhance interclass/inter-house events through-out the school year.

Outcomes of the Programmes

  • Young people who are creative, employable, aware of health and wellbeing and able to lead various capacities.
  • An enhanced working relationship between the PE department and pupils.
  • An enriched relationship with the local community in terms of sports clubs and feeder primary schools.

  • Higher Sports Leaders
    • Role – Liaise with Mentor and group to facilitate learning and further experiences
  • Sports leaders
    • Role – Attain certification (circularly). Support Higher Sports Leaders and develop learning and experiences in a leadership context within the wider community
  • Assistant Sports Leaders
    • Role – Attain certification (circularly). Support Higher Sports Leaders and develop learning and experiences in a leadership context within the wider community
  • Activity Leaders
    • Role – Attain certification (extra-circularly) and support extra-curricular activities and assist with sporting and whole school events.
