World of Work – Day 4

On our final day of World of Work Week, we had visits from 2 more professions, a university and 4 Careers Advisors.

Denise, a Civil Servant, shared with us her role in Education Scotland. She gave us an insight into the creative and legal sides to her job. Denise has important roles in organising the Scottish Learning Festival and advising the Deputy First Minister, amongst other responsibilities.

Rebecca, a gymnastics coach, shared with us her journey and her role in teaching young children gymnastics. Some of our children recognised Rebecca as they already attend classes with her! Rebecca told us what she loves about our job, but also that it could be a little dangerous at times, like when she had her nose burst by a child she was helping during their bar work!

Primary 7 spent part of the day on Friday with Lynne from Glasgow Caledonian University. She shared with the class many of the subjects and courses on offer at the university, including the subjects which are renowned at “Caley”. Some of the children thought this might be the best university to choose for their careers in technology and engineering.

Primary 5 and Primary 6 worked with the team of Careers Advisors who came in to share the Animal Me activities, from World of Work. Each child had a questionnaire to complete and depending on their answers they got a letter for each section, which made up a code linked to an animal within a database. When they had matched their code with their animal they could find the animal in their book, which then gave them a description of the animal and it’s personality. The pupils could relate to these and decide if this animal description was similar to their own demeanour. There was also a list of jobs which each animal/personality were suited to. This activity proved a hit with the children. They all couldn’t wait to find out their animal and job possibilities and they couldn’t wait to ask each other about theirs!
