GIST Lorry visits Primary 5

Today the GIST lorry came to visit our school and P5 had the opportunity to learn more about Road Safety.

We all had the chance to listen to a PowerPoint about ways to stay safe, especially when it comes to lorries being in the road. It was really interesting to learn about the stopping distance needed by big lorries and how heavy they can be.

Everyone then had the chance to sit inside the cab in the fron of the lorry to allow pupils to see what it’s like from the drivers perspective and exactly what the driver can and can’t see.

Pupils were shown the actual stopping distance needed by the drivers and even the teacher was amazed at how the view is restricted right infront of you when you’re so high up from the road.

When Mrs Weir sat in the front of the cab, 13 pupils stood in front of the lorry and here’s what she could see…not one of them!!!

It was only because of the mirror at the front of the lorry that Mrs Weir could actually see that there was anyone there.

(At all times the lorry was not running and was unable to move due to special equipment infront of the tyres)

Everyone really enjoyed the session and learned some valuable information from the 2 instructors who came to see us.
