Rights Respecting Schools

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is an important agreement by countries who have promised to protect children’s rights. The Convention on the Rights of the Child explains who children are, all their rights, and the responsibilities of governments. All the rights are connected, they are all equally important and they cannot be taken away from children.

Cathedral Primary has been embedding the UNCRC articles into the life and work of the school community for a number of years. Posters highlighting different articles are displayed strategically around the school building and in classrooms, the articles are regularly referenced and explored at weekly assemblies and the articles are directly linked to the various activities in the school’s bespoke ‘Rose Trainer Achievement Award’.

Building on the great progress Cathedral Primary has already made embedding a child rights approach into all aspects of school life, we are now applying for formal accreditation through the UNICEF ‘Rights Respecting Schools’ Award and will be applying for ‘Silver’ in the near future. To achieve Silver (Rights Aware), Cathedral Primary will be assessed by a UNICEF Professional Adviser who will look at the whole school’s rights respecting work.
