Tuesday 21st February saw the first of a series of Family Learning workshops. Parents and carers had the opportunity to hear
about Cathedral Primary’s ‘Active8’ approach, which organises learning and teaching across each school day in a way which maximises pupil engagement, challenge and personalisation & choice. Active8 also frees-up more time for teachers to deliver high-quality direct teaching input to ability groups, as well as work with individual pupils.
Following the presentation from Mr Young and two Primary 7 pupils, parents and carers visited their child’s classroom to see Active8 in action. Feedback from parents was overwhelmingly positive:
“I like the choice and flexibility it gives the pupils. It gives more of a chance for differentiation.” (P4a parent)
“Children seem excited about it. I think it creates independence and builds their confidence.” (P5a parent)
“I’m loving seeing all the children learn in different ways. They all seem so relaxed and happy.” (P6b parent)
“I think Active8 is brilliant! Gives children independence and choice and makes learning more fun.” (P4b parent)
“Great to have freedom to shape own learning to keep engaged.” (P4/5 parent)
“It will help with future learning and life skills.” (P4a parent)`

Primary 2 pupils from our P2/3 class made fantastic junk models recently as part of their ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ topic. Each and every one of the children displayed imagination, ingenuity and skill creating their models. Well done, everyone!
Primary 5 pupils ran another successful coffee morning on Friday 17th February and, as always, the hall was packed with Cathedral families enjoying a good blether over tea and cake. A fantastic £835.56 was raised for school funds.
The Cathedral Primary curriculum doesn’t just consist of the learning which goes on in the school building but also encapsulates the wider achievements of our young learners. Cathedral pupils have the opportunity to log these wider achievements on their ‘Rose Trainer Achievement Award’ record card.
Primary 6b have been developing their general knowledge in recent weeks, particularly on capital cities around the world. These eight brain-boxes scored full marks in their class quiz on Friday 10th February, naming all capital cities correctly.
Motherwell Football Community Trust
delivered football taster sessions for our P6 and P7 pupils on Wednesday 8th February. Ellie Askey, Girls Football Officer, complimented our fabulous pupils on their skill, commitment, application and impeccable behaviour. Champion effort all round, Cathedral!
Congratulations to the young footballers pictured above for displaying ACE during training sessions:
On Tuesday 7th February, three Primary 6 pupils represented Cathedral Primary at the North Lanarkshire sustainability conference. The children had the opportunity to explore various exhibits and hear from several keynote speakers.
One of the priorities in our 2022/23 School
Improvement Plan is reading for enjoyment and pupils and staff have already made great progress in this area. Of course, classes have access to our fantastic library each week and every pupil now reads for at least twenty minutes a day.
Smart School Council, which gives every Cathedral pupil a voice, is continuing to drive forward change and improvement across our school community.
organisation ‘Respect Me’ to review our current approaches to preventing and responding to bullying. This work is being overseen by Miss Degnan, one of our Primary 3 teachers, and our twelve House Captains have already agreed on a number of ideas to take things forward. As always, these are set out on our Smart School Council action board so that our whole school community can be kept up-to-date with progress.
