Primary 4 visit new park for fun and inspiration!

Those families who live close to the school may be aware that a brand new park has opened on Roman Road, the design of which Cathedral pupils were directly involved in. Our Primary 4 pupils have now been asked to create a sign for the park and some of the children visited the fantastic new facility on Tuesday 11th June  to have fun on the playground equipment and get inspiration for their design. We look forward to seeing the winning design at the entrance to the park in the coming weeks.

Primary 3 travel back in time at New Lanark

Primary 3 pupils enjoyed a fascinating trip to New Lanark on Tuesday 11th June. As well as the opportunity to explore the former 18th Century cotton mill village on the banks of the Clyde (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the children had three different workshops.

During the course of the day, the children were transported back in time to a Victorian classroom. Dressed as  Victorian pupils, the children practised cursive handwriting and completed arithmetic questions using an abacus.

The ‘Annie McLeod Experience’ was a huge hit with the children. They were taken on a fascinating journey of discovery by the ghost of mill worker Annie McLeod who told her story of life in New Lanark in 1820.

The children also enjoyed a guided tour to see how the the villagers of New Lanark lived. They saw an 1820s Millworkers’ House and found out that often ten or more people lived in one room! What a very different world it was back in the Victorian era!

Primary 7 showcase their learning on World War II

As part of this term’s World War II topic, Primary 7 pupils had the opportunity to choose an area of interest to delve deeper into. On Friday 7th June, the children showcased their learning to other classes in an impressive range of ways including models, PowerPoints, posters, leaflets and displays of authentic artifacts. The children will be setting up their exhibition again on Friday 21st June as part of their Learning Showcase.

Well done to Primary 7 for being such enthusiastic leaders of your learning!

Mrs McCarthy pays special visit to Cathedral

Ahead of her next round of treatment, Mrs McCarthy paid a special visit to Cathedral on Friday 6th June. The children were over the moon to see Mrs McCarthy and she was equally delighted to see not only her own class but many of the other pupils she’s inspired over the years. It was just wonderful to see the smiles, hear the laughter and feel the energy! Mrs McCarthy rounded off the afternoon at our Primary 1 learning showcase.

We continue to keep Mrs McCarthy and her family in our prayers.

There’s still time to make a donation to Mrs Loose’s charity run for ‘Braintrust’, which takes place on Sunday 16th June.

Families and friends WOW-ed by Primary 1’s learning showcase

Primary 1 pupils took to the stage on Friday 6th June for their Learning Showcase, all about people who help us. Dentists, teachers, paramedics, police officers, road crossing patrol and builders all made an appearance during the humorous and energetic performance. The children spoke out with huge confidence and had the audience’s feet tapping along to the catchy songs, complete with actions.

What an amazing and fun journey the children have been on in their learning since they started school way back in August… they’re definitely ready for the new challenges of Primary 2!

New Primary 1 pupils enjoy adventure trail around Cathedral

The boys and girls beginning Primary 1 at Cathedral Primary in August had their second induction visit on Thursday 5th June. The children enjoyed an exciting adventure trail around the school with their new Primary 7 buddies. This gave them the opportunity to visit lots of different spaces including the dining hall, the library, the playground and even Mr Young’s office where they each received a gold sticker. Our young learners finished off in their new Primary 1 classroom where they had their height measured and added their name to the chart.

We have absolutely no doubt that the boys and girls will have grown in both centimetres and even more confidence by the time they start the big school on 14th August!

Primary 6 delve into world of pathology at Surgeons’ Hall Museum

As part of their current topic on the human body, Primary 6 pupils spent a fascinating day at Surgeons’ Hall Museum in Edinburgh on Wednesday 5th June. The children learned about advances in surgery over the years, many of which were unimaginable to patients a mere hundred years ago. Our young learners also explored the science of pathology, which involves examining surgically removed organs and tissues with the aim of finding cures for diseases.

Surgeons’ Hall Museum is perhaps not a common destination for a primary school trip but it certainly proved to be a day of rich learning for Primary 6 and one which has no doubt inspired some pupils to consider a future career in medicine.

Day of adventure for budding Primary 2 zoologists

Primary 2 pupils spent a fun-filled day at Five Sisters Zoo on Tuesday 4th May. The children had the opportunity to see lots of different animals including bears, arctic foxes and red pandas.

The boys and girls rounded off their visit with fun in the soft-play area and, before they left, were complimented by Five Sisters Zoo staff on their enthusiasm and exemplary behaviour. Well done, AMAZING Primary 2s!

Mrs Loose runs Glasgow 10k for vital cause

As members of our school community know, Mrs McCarthy was diagnosed with a brain tumour in February. Any individual who has been lucky enough to have had Mrs McCarthy as their teacher over the years will know just how inspirational she is… and she has continued to be an absolute inspiration in the way she’s faced her recent circumstances.

Inspired by her dear friend, Mrs Loose has decided to run the Glasgow Women’s 10k to raise money for Braintrust, a charity that delivers vital services to support the brain tumour community. Mrs Loose writes:

“I’m running the Glasgow Women’s 10k this year for the first time in 10 years. I’ve been inspired by my beautiful friend Julie who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumour and hasn’t stopped fighting since. She’s been on an unimaginable journey these past few months but her strength and unbreakable spirit is what has made me get up off the couch and get running!! I’m running for Brainstrust, a charity that delivers vital services to support the brain tumour community. Please help me raise some money for this amazing cause.”

If any members of our school community, or friends of the school, would like to contribute to this important cause, Mrs Loose’s ‘Just Giving’ page can be accessed via the link below:
