I am becoming aware of the importance of celebrations, festivals and customs in Christian people’s lives. (RME 0-03a)
Our young learners have been very excited this week in the lead up to Christmas, with lots of different festive learning experiences.
We have used the smartboard to listen to and watch the nativity story and the children now have a good understanding of the meaning of Christmas.
Our boys and girls have been mixing and making their own gingerbread playdough, using their senses to describe how the playdough smells and feels. They selected buttons and sequins to make their gingerbread man clothes.
Some children explored the natural loose parts and created their own decorated Christmas stars and trees using the tinsel, coloured beads and baubles.
Our young learners have been mark making in a variety of ways and have particularly enjoyed using the cocoa powder.
Our building blocks have been a popular resource for imaginative play, with our young learners making sleighs, Christmas trees and stars.
There certainly has been LOTS of Christmas fun in Cathedral nursery this week!
Spanish is now the main language taught in Cathedral Primary School and across Our Lady’s High School cluster. One of our parents, Mrs Pech, is
a native Spanish speaker and kindly visited each Primary 7 class on Friday 13th December to talk about the importance and benefits of the Spanish language. Our Primary 7 learners found out that Spanish is the second most commonly spoken language across the world (499 million speakers globally), making it really useful when visiting Spanish-speaking countries, including Mexico and Argentina, and of huge importance in the world of work, particularly careers in tourism and business. Mrs Pech’s presentation ended with a fun quiz and the opportunity to ask questions.
Coach Willie organised a friendly in-house Christmas football tournament for Primary 5 – 7 on Friday 13th December. All matches were seven-aside and each year group played a total of four games. Primary 6 were crowned the winning year group at the end of the tournament and were very proud to receive the trophy. Well done, team!
These Primary 7 learners worked together on Thursday 12th December to plan a delicious three-course Christmas dinner. The girls had to work within a budget and used a real supermarket brochure to choose the various items of food. The task involved careful discussion and planning and the accurate addition of decimals to ensure the meal fell within the allocated budget.
These Primary 4 learners were very proud to share their Christmas animation with Mr Young on Thursday 12th December. The children worked together and used PowerPoint to create an animation of a snowman being built, complete with falling snow. Impressive digital skills!
The week beginning Monday 16th December is the last week of term and there are a number of Christmas events taking place.
No matter how close it gets to the Christmas holidays, the learning never stops here at Cathedral. These Primary 7 learners did, however, take a wee break after completing their Scottish National Standardised Assessments on Wednesday 11th December to engage in some slightly more relaxed learning involving Christmas crafts. Much easier on the brain, for sure, but still lots of opportunities to use and develop technology, art and listening and talking skills!
Cathedral pupils were treated to a fabulous festive feast on Wednesday 11th December at our annual school community Christmas dinner. There was a choice of turkey with all the trimmings, steak pie or the vegetarian option, rounded off with ice cream and a chocolate treat. As usual, the occasion was made all the more special with table cloths, napkins and even table service from our Primary 7 waiters… and, of course, there was lots of Christmas music to sing along to!
Mr Young’s band of festive elves worked as an incredible team on Wednesday 11th December to prepare for Cathedral’s annual Christmas dinner. As you can imagine, feeding over 500 hungry mouths requires very slick organisation and the efficient production line set up by our elves ensured everything was ready ahead of Cathedral pupils descending on the dining hall for the feast of the year!
Cathedral has another talented swimmer within its ranks. This Primary 7 learner did exceptionally well in the recent Motherwell and Wishaw swimming gala winning:
