Please join us for morning Mass

Lent isn’t just about giving things up but, more importantly, doing something extra to deepen our faith and grow closer to God. To help us on our Lenten journey, please remember that Fr Lamb celebrates Mass in the gym hall at 8.15am every Tuesday and Friday morning throughout Lent. It’s a wonderful way to start the day.

A warm welcome is extended to all pupils, parents, staff and parishioners.

Primary 7b join Cathedral GOMA

The latest artwork to appear in Cathedral GOMA (Gallery OMagnificent Art) online exhibition comes from Primary 7b.

Our Primary 7 learners’ black and white observational sketches of everyday objects were created using pencil, including smudging the pencil to add shadow. Impressive attention to detail!

Keep watching this space for more masterpieces from Cathedral’s talented artists.

Historic artefacts fascinate Primary 7 learners

Primary 7 learners are busy preparing for a major exhibition, linked to Cathedral’s 150th anniversary, which will take place in St Bride’s Hall from Tuesday 20th – Thursday 22nd May. Our three Primary 7 classes have been researching various parts of Cathedral’s long history, including the Victorian era, World War II and the swinging sixties.

As well as featuring a fascinating series of displays of written information, photographs and school log-book entries for visitors to enjoy, the exhibition will also include actual artefacts linked to different points in Cathedral’s 150 year old story. Gillian Brogan from Motherwell Heritage Centre worked with Primary 7 learners on Friday 7th March to explore how the various artefacts could be integrated into the exhibition: everything  from a gas mask to carbolic soup, a potty to My Little Pony!

It’s going to be an incredible exhibition and one of the highlights of Cathedral’s 150th anniversary celebrations, so please save the dates in your diary!

Primary 3 make final preparations for First Reconciliation

Fr Lamb visited each Primary 3 class on Friday 7th March to help the children make final preparations for their First Reconciliation, which they will celebrate in the cathedral on Tuesday 11th March.

The children completed a quiz about good and bad choices and Fr Lamb explored with the children if all bad choices are sins.  The children reflected on how some bad choices are not necessarily sins, but maybe still aren’t the best of choices.

The children went on to reflect on how the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a good thing as it is an opportunity to say sorry to God and make a commitment to being a better version of ourselves.

Fr Lamb told the children that they are like saints immediately after receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation and that, although we may well sin again, it is important we try our very best to live lives inspired by the saints.  He reminded the children of Blessed Carlo Acutis, a young person just like them who made good choices and touched the lives of so many people.

We keep Primary 3 in our prayers in these final days leading up to their First Reconciliation.

Junior Chaplains lead Cathedral learners in the Examen

The Examen is a prayer developed by St Ignatius Loyola and found in his Spiritual Exercises. Its purpose is to help us become aware of how God is at work in our lives and recognise where he has been present with us during the course of each day. Simply put, the Examen helps us to find God in all things, no matter how ordinary.

Junior Chaplains from our Ignite Team led classes across the school in the Examen on Friday 7th March and will continue to do so each Friday throughout Lent. The Ignite Team have also provided each class with a shorter, two minute, version of the Examen to pray with their teacher at the end of each day.

Adult newsfeed readers may be interested in praying the Examen for themselves, particularly during the season of Lent. Please click on the link below to find out more:

This week in Cathedral Nursery

RME 0-03a I am becoming aware of the importance of celebrations, festivals and customs in religious peoples lives.

TCH 0-01a I enjoy playing with and exploring technologies to discover what they can do and how they can help us.

MNU 0-11a I have experimented with everyday items as units of measure to investigate and compare sizes and amounts in my environment, sharing my findings with others.

LIT 0-01b I enjoy exploring and choosing stories and other text to watch, read or listen to, and can share my likes and dislikes.

Wellbeing Indicator: RESPONSIBLE

This week in Cathedral Nursery, our young learners have been busy finding out about religious festivals and traditions. They talked about their existing knowledge of some well-known traditions such as Pancake Tuesday and then used iPads to learn about Ash Wednesday, the month of Ramadan and Eid.

In our STEM area, our learners have been exploring measuring in a variety of ways. They have found out about tools we use to measure things accurately such as a measuring tape, metre stick and a ruler. Some of our younger children were able to use other ways to measure such as foot span and building blocks to measure height. Our wooden toolkits have been well used this week by our young engineers and they have given careful thought to health and safety.

All children enjoyed sharing their favourite books and stories on World Book Day and this sparked great conversations about likes and dislikes. In our story area, our young learners were encouraged to vote for ‘Story Of The Week’ and some of our pre-school children went on to share the reasoning behind their vote. The children also worked together to create a giant beanstalk for the playroom and built the giant’s castle using recycled materials.

What an incredible week of learning!

House mascots join the Cathedral family

Following an idea dropped into our Pupil Voice Suggestion Box, one of our recent Smart School Council projects was the opportunity for Cathedral learners to design a mascot for their House. The most popular animal submitted for each House was chosen as the winner and all six have now been transformed into real-life mascots, complete with their own Cathedral t-shirt.

Carey Crocodile, Douglas Dinosaur, Thomson Tiger, Devine Dragon, Gilmour Gorilla and Scanlan Squirrel now have pride of place in our trophy cabinet at the main entrance.

Learners across Cathedral enjoy World Book Day

Primary 1 learners and their Primary 7 buddies got together on World Book Day to enjoy ‘The Cat in the Hat’ by Dr Seuss. Our learners, from opposite ends of the school, enjoyed listening to the story together and then teamed-up to make fantastic hats of their own (see below).

“I know some good games we could play,” said the cat. “I know some good tricks,” said the Cat in the Hat.
