Cathedral Primary School marked a major milestone in 2025 as it celebrated its 150th anniversary. Throughout the year, pupils, staff, parents and parishioners enjoyed various opportunities to reflect on their place within a vibrant community of faith and learning that has flourished for over fifteen decades.
As part of the celebrations, every member of staff and each pupil received a commemorative medal. In May 2025, a special anniversary Mass was held, featuring the debut performance of a new Mass setting, Mass of Jesus the Teacher, composed by Head Teacher Graeme Young. On the same day, stones from the original 1875 school building were unveiled in the cathedral grounds, creating a tangible link to the school’s earliest days. An exhibition, open to the local community, showcased the school’s rich history and the many stories that shaped it. Pupils also planted 150 daffodil bulbs as symbols of renewed hope and growth for the future. To mark the occasion for generations yet to come, a time capsule was buried in the cathedral grounds, preserving memories of this milestone year.
On Wednesday 12th February 2025, the following motion was lodged in the Scottish Parliament by Clare Adamson MSP, Motherwell and Wishaw:
The Parliament congratulates Cathedral Primary School on celebrating the 150th anniversary of the parish and school; recognises what it sees as the importance of this milestone in highlighting the longstanding role that the school and parish have played in the education and spiritual life of the community; commends the dedication of teachers, staff, parents, and parishioners who have contributed to the school’s rich history and continued success, and wishes Cathedral Primary School and the parish every success in the years to come as they continue to inspire and support future generations.
