The Three Read Approach

The Green Group have been introduced to a new story called ‘The Wishing Stone.’  We discussed some basic book handling skills e.g. front and back cover, the title and the role of the author and the illustrator.  Some children were able to recall this information and share this with others within our group.  All children were able to recall the spine of the book and its purpose.  They also related this to their own spine and could feel this on their back.  We introduced three new words and learnt and understood the meaning of these.  Most of the children were able to identify the characters in the story and the events which took place.  They were able to relate to the characters feelings and recognise why they felt like this.

This is some of the information the children wanted to share about the story ‘The Wishing Stone.’

“The characters were monkey, mouse, armadillo and flamingo.”

“The title is The Wishing Stone.”

“Armadillo lived in a swamp.”

“A swamp is dirty water with bugs in it.”

“The mouse was feeling grumpy because he couldn’t swim.”

“The flamingo thought it was a wishing rock and wished for a den.”

“Armadillo was sad because he had no friends.  They got a stick to pull, pull, pull.”
