Realising the Ambition
Realising the Ambition helps us make sure our practice is rooted in what we know young children need to learn, grow and thrive. It guides our approach to play, relationships, curiosity and learning, while helping us provide experiences that are meaningful for every child.
Curriculum for Excellence
The Curriculum for Excellence helps us provide children with rich experiences that support their learning and development. We use it alongside play and children’s interests to help children develop the skills, confidence and curiosity they need for their next steps.
GIRFEC
GIRFEC helps us put every child at the heart of what we do. It supports us to work closely with children, families and other professionals when needed, so that children feel safe, healthy, nurtured, active, respected, responsible and included.
Personal Learning Planning at Netherton Family Learning Centre
Every child is unique, so we use Personal Learning Plans to help us understand what matters to each child, what they enjoy, what they are learning and where they might need support. We work with families to make sure their child’s voice, interests and individual needs are reflected in their learning journey.
GIRFME Plans
GIRFME Plans help us provide a more personalised approach when a child needs additional support. They allow us to work together with families and relevant professionals to agree what support will make the biggest difference and how we will know that it is having a positive impact.
Application forms 26/27
Thinking about joining us at Netherton? Our application forms are available here for families who would like to apply for a place. Applications are currently open for 2026–27, with applications for the following academic year opening around October/November. We look forward to welcoming new families to our Netherton community.
Risk Assessments
In Netherton Family Learning Centre, we have moved to digital formats of daily risk assessment and cleaning schedules further to our 25/26 reflections of daily practice and in line with Care Inspectorate’s movement to digital platforms. We also have risk assessments created for each space within our setting that has enabled us to ensure the nursery is safe for all children to use.

Planning for children’s learning and development
In August 2026, following on from our Annual Improvement Report, we are changing how we plan for children’s learning and development from Personal Learning Planning to our systems for responsive and intentional planning. We document children’s learning on Online Learning Journal platform and using Floorbooks.

In August 2026, the team at Netherton Family Learning Centre refreshed these and the image below represents this. We are now in consultation with children and families before finalising this.
