Business Management – Higher

Who is this course for?

This course is particularly relevant for those pupils who have an interest in business in the widest sense, not just those who want to start their own business.  There will be regular reference to business in the news so pupils should keep up to date with what is happening in world.

The course comprises of 3 units.

Understanding Busines

In this unit pupils will develop their understanding of the ways in which organisations in the private, public and third sectors operate. This unit also allows pupils to analyse the impact that
the internal and the external environment has on an organisation’s activity.

Management of People and Finance

In this unit pupils will develop skills and knowledge that will deepen their understanding  of the issues facing organisations in the management of people and finance. Pupils will extend their grasp of relevant theories, concepts and procedures used in planning for an organisation’s success, including leadership, motivation and finance.

Management of Marketing and Operations

In this unit pupils will develop their knowledge of the importance to organisations of having effective marketing and operations systems.  They will develop knowledge of relevant theories, concepts and procedures used by organisations in order to improve and/or maintain quality and competitiveness.


Higher Assessment
Pupils will complete a 2,000 word Assignment worth 30 marks.  Pupils will carry out research on a business issue of their choice.  They will then write up their report under exam conditions. The SQA exam which is worth 90 marks is allocated 2 hours 45 minutes.  Both of these course components are marked by SQA markers.
