The Water Cycle

As part of our new science topic, we have been learning about the water cycle.

After learning about the process, we completed some explanation writing and completed a diagram, labelling the correct parts in the cycle. We then did an experiment to create our own rain and visually see exactly how the water cycle woks on a small scale.

*Parent Prompt* Ask your child what these words mean within the water cycle process: precipitation, evaporation, condensation, accumulation!

Summerlee Trip

Today, Primary 5 visited Summerlee Heritage Museum. It was a great trip and we learned lots.

As part of our Scottish Inventors topic we have been learning about different inventions and how they have impacted on people’s lives today. It was very interesting seeing some of these inventions, such as the television, phone and radio, in Miners row. This was a row of living rooms set up to show how living conditions changed through the decades. Things have changed a lot!

Inside the museum we were able to look at some amazing historical models of some machinery which was used in different industries in the past.

The weather stayed dry, for the most part, and we were able to have fun at the museums play park as well as have a look at ‘The Vulcan’, a replica of the first iron-hulled boat. We were surprised to find out that one of the Scottish Inventors that we have been studying, James Watt, was involved in the management in creating the canal for ‘The Vulcan’.

Our final part of the day was a workshop delivered by the Education team at Summerlee.

In science we have been looking at the Water Cycle and to further our learning the workshop looked at floating and sinking. We will be covering this further in class but it was fascinating to learn about how heavy boats stay afloat.

Have a look at some of our snaps from a great day!

A special thanks to the parent helpers- Mrs Taylor and Mrs McKinstry, we couldn’t have done it without you!

Collaborative Learning

In Maths we have been working with a partner while learning a new method of multiplying 2 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. We had to give a partner a calculation to work out and they had to explain the working on their whiteboard. This allowed us to learn from each other and improve our knowledge.

Here is an example of what we were doing:

2 3

x 4

Units first: 3 x 4 = 12

Then the tens: 20 x 4 = 80

Finally add your two answers: 12 + 80 = 92

The best partner group was Iona and Lucy. Well done girls!

Amazing Artists

Primary 5 have been learning about famous artists. We have been using their work to inspire us during Art and Design lessons.

Firstly, we learned about Gaudi, a famous architect from Spain. We used his mosaic style to create perfect pumpkins at Halloween time.

Secondly, we were inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his use of geometric shapes. We made a stained glass window similar to his rose design. We were very interested in the fact that he was a Scottish artist.

Lastly, we learned how to draw a portrait and created some sketches of the Scottish Inventors we covered in our topic.

We were inspired by all of the artists that we have learned about so far and have been able to compare their different styles and similarities in their work.

The pictures look fab, well done Primary 5!

Fundraising Fun!

In Primary 5 we have been getting ready for Children in Need. We ran a successful tuck shop and made these wonderful posters to raise awareness.

The tuck shop was a great opportunity to use our new money skills that we have been learning in Maths. We looked at budgeting, cost price, selling price, profit, making totals and giving change.

These posters worked a treat and we managed to raise an amazing profit of £45.55. Well done Primary 5!

Super Scientists

As part of our ‘Scottish Inventors’ topic, we have been learning about Alexander Fleming and how he discovered Penicillin (a type of anti-biotic).  Within this learning, we looked at microorganisms and conducted an experiment with yeast and sugar that resulted in the production of Carbon Dioxide.  Both mould  and yeast are fungus’. The yeast in our experiment was eating the sugar for energy. Fleming discovered that mould had Penicillin in it which killed bacteria.

P5 had just as much of a shock that the balloon had blown up as Alexander Fleming did on his return from holiday to see no bacteria growing around a mould blob in his lab. The results were very interesting and we had lots of fun!

Thank-you Nicola Clyne for helping to take this weeks blog post pictures.

What We’ve Been Learning in Primary 5

Our first term in Primary 5 has been full of fantastic learning! Some of our highlights have been;

Our first topic was Chocolate. Primary 5 presented some amazing ideas for new designs and learned all about the design process. As a homework project we actually produced our designs. Thank-you to all the parents and pupils for their effort, they looked good enough to eat! We also learned about the history of chocolate and Fairtrade.

We were lucky enough to visit the CineBus and learn all about dyslexia.

We love taking our learning outdoors, whether it be basketball in the playground, looking for signs of Autumn or showing the bridging technique in Maths.

Have a look at some of our snaps!

As we begin the new term we will continue our learning on Scottish Inventors. Keep an  eye out for more posts coming soon.

It’s been a great term so far, keep up the good work Primary 5! Have a lovely October Holiday!
