Positive relationships and behaviour in the school setting are crucial for pupil wellbeing and learning, and the realisation of the promise of Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC). At Dykehead Primary School our emphasis is on relationships and the principles of nurture, linked to a range of key drivers from the Scottish Government such as:
- Education (Scotland) Act 1980,
- Included, Engaged and Involved Part 2 (2012),
- The Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004, 2009,
- Behaviour Relationships, Better Learning, Better Behaviour (2013),
- Equality Act 2010,
- Children and Young People Scotland Act 2014,
- United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)

In the majority of cases, positive school ethos and respectful relationships prevents problematic issues such as bullying. However, Dykehead Primary School has a clearly defined Anti-bullying Strategy for dealing with bullying should it occur. This was a result of a lot of hard work and input from pupils in session 2017-18. The policy was developed in accordance with the Scottish Government policy “A National Approach to Anti-Bullying for Children and Young People” (2010), and the North Lanarkshire Council policy “Bullying: It’s Never Acceptable”. As a Rights-Respecting School, we aim for all our pupils to understand our Anti-Bullying message in the context of respect for each other’s rights under the UNCRC.
