Sportshall Athletics

We had a brilliant time at the Athletics event on Wednesday 26th November at The Tryst. All of our 24 athletes gave 110% effort and we were delighted to be placed second in our group. This means we do not automatically get into the North Lanarkshire finals but there is still a chance we could be picked to go  as the fastest runners up. The children supported each other, celebrated all the results and personal achievements and were a real credit to the school. Thanks to Mrs Young for her excellent support too.

Erupting Volcanoes!!

In class we have been doing science experiments. Our topic is natural disasters so we have been learning about volcanoes. We did the experiment on how to erupt our own volcanoes. We used a plastic bottle with no water in it, scrap paper, plasticene, glitter, 250ml of vinegar, a funnel and 3 tablespoons of baking powder. All of the class got to put in the vinegar and baking powder. We started by covering the plastic bottle with scrap paper and then covered with plasticene. We added glitter to make it look like lava flowing out and then we put in the vinegar and baking powder. Miss O’Neil took videos of the volcanoes exploding. We really enjoyed this experiment and hope to do it again.

The First Floor of the Science Centre

On Wednesday our class went to the science centre to learn about forces and space. In our free time we could explore all the floors in the science centre. We started on the 3rd floor and then visited the floors on the lower levels. The theme was animals and illusions and lots of challenging games to play. We first looked at the illusions and like the mirror table which makes you look like a head. There was also a strange amount of mirrors that made you look small, fat, large or skinny. The animal side had a game where you put you had in a box and guessed the sea creature. The science centre also had live cockroaches which had a spy camera so you could see things that the people watching could not see.

Daffodil planting

For science we planted daffodils and crocus bulbs we did this for an experiment by the Edina trust and was  also done in school’s from Scotland England and Wales. The experiment was to find out if global warming is effecting our seasons.

How We Planted Our Daffodills-

We filled our pots half way up with soil and put our daffodils in them. We filled it up more and put our crocus bulbs in. We now measure the rainfall and temperature and send it off to the Edina trust.

Art

Last week we were having an art week. Primary 7 were focusing on an artist called Louis Comfort Tiffany. We learned that he invented a glass called ‘Favril’, it is a type of glass that whatever way you look at it, it is a different colour. We made some our selves with tissue paper it was really fun.

Volcanoes

We have been learning about volcanoes for our topic. We watched some videos to learn more about them. We learned that you can get different types of volcanoes. Some of them are active, dormant and extinct. We were put into four stations and we had different tasks, and we will share our learning next week. The things we had to do were make a power point on the ring of fine and tectonic plates,  make a poster and search for facts.

Science

We have been looking at various different forces for our science topic. We carried out an experiment and we’ve used different types of material such as: felt, sand-paper, plastic and carpet. We carried out this experiment because we wanted  to know what fabric would carry the (toy) car further in distance. We did 3 different tests. Most peoples hypothesis were wrong because they thought that the car would travel quicker on plastic but it actually didn’t and the car traveled further on sand-paper. The reason why the car didn’t travel further on plastic was because the plastic was so slidy it moved forwards and backwards and also because there wasn’t a lot of friction between the 2 objects.
