Beat the Teacher Race

The second Calderhead ‘Beat the Teacher’ race took place at lunchtime on 10th March 2017.

Despite predictions that Mr Higgins was a strong contender for first place, congratulations to Connor in S2 who finished first (just ahead of the  Mr Higgins).

Well done to all the staff and pupils who participated.

Scottish Youth Parliament

Scottish Youth Parliament logoCalderhead High School pupils will be joining young people all over Scotland to cast their votes in the Scottish Youth Parliament elections, which are taking place from the 3rd to the 17th of March, 2017.

Elections for the SYP are held every two years and young people aged 14 to 25 are eligible to vote to elect Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs). The Scottish Youth Parliament is a politically-independent organisation that aims to represent the young people of Scotland. It is made up of around 150 young people aged from 14−25 across Scotland. Every constituency area can elect a MSYP to represent the views and opinions of young people. In addition some MSYPs also attend representing Voluntary Organisations. The SYP meets three times a year to listen to and recognise the issues that are most important to young people, ensuring that their voices are heard by decision-makers.

Calderhead High recently enjoyed a visit from Sarah Quinn, one of the five candidates standing for the Wishaw/Airdrie constituency. You can see the other candidates online.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYOJSRTuW08

Pupils will use their Young Scot card to vote online –  numbers will be provided if  forgotten. http://elections.youngscot.org/Election/SelectConstituencyGroup/2017-scottish-youth-parliament-election

World Book Day

Happy World Book Day!

Thursday, 2nd March is World Book Day – a huge celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading in schools, libraries and homes in over 100 countries. World Book Day is the world’s biggest annual celebration of reading – and 2017 marks its 20th anniversary.

Pupils at Calderhead High School marked World Book Day this year by participating in a book quiz. Congratulations to Mrs Johnston’s S3 Maths class who answered all the questions correctly in the shortest time.

The library assistants also created a beautiful book tree, designed by Heather in S3. Pupils and staff have been noting their favourite books and authors on paper ‘leaves’ and adding them to the tree.

World Book Day
WBD Tokens

Pupils were also issued with World Book day tokens which they can take to their local bookseller or participating supermarket and swap for one of the special World Book Day books or use to get £1 off any full price book instead.

Pupils can redeem their World Book day tokens online through the Scholastic Book Club. This is a great way for pupils and their parents and carers to choose books together and features a wide range of titles with prices starting from just £2.99. You also help to support our school – every £1 you spend will earn 20p for our school in Scholastic Rewards.

There’s never any obligation to order but if you would like to buy anything, you can order online and pay  by credit or debit card and don’t forget to enter the number of World Day Book tokens at the checkout to claim your £1 off.

If you choose ‘school delivery’ you will benefit from free post and packing to the school – please remember to add the pupil’s name and class. The books will then be delivered to the school and given to your child.

Vex Robotics Challenge

Senior pupils Ceinwyn, Samantha and Jason  participated in the VEX Robotics challenge at New College Lanarkshire on Friday 23 February 2017 . There was fierce competition and the Calderhead High team narrowly missed winning the challenge.

The VEX Competitions are presented by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation and teams of students are tasked with designing and building a robot to play against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge.

Classroom STEM concepts are put to the test on the playing field as students learn lifelong skills in teamwork, leadership, communications, and more.

Well done to Ceinwyn, Jason and Samantha.

Option Choice Information Evening – 22nd February

Options BookletPupils in S2 to S5 will soon be making important decisions about their course choices for the next academic year.

Pupils, parents and carers are invited to attend an Information Evening to discuss the Option Choice process on Wednesday, 22 February at 6.00 pm.

This will give them an opportunity to meet with members of the Senior Management and Pupil Support Teams to discuss in detail the pupil’s progress and future pathways. Pupil Support staff will be on hand to answer and advise both pupils and parents. Tea and Coffee will be supplied.
The course choice process is a very important time in the school calendar and as such we would encourage parents to help us to support our young people by attending the event with them. Click below to see the Course Choice Options Information Booklets:
