Malawi – Girls Go For Health
Calderhead High School agreed to raise £500 per year to sponsor a home school partnership worker in Thuchila. This home school worker will deliver a “Girls Go For Health” programme in the area. S2 pupil, Amy, is seen here holding the agreement with Thuchila School, Malawi.
In 2015 Malawi was ranked the third poorest country in the world with the average income of only £520 per year.
Mr Russell’s Fundraising
Calderhead High School participates in various events to support and promote the invaluable work carried out by St Andrew’s Hospice for its patients and their families.
This summer Pupil Support and PE Teacher, Mr Russell, will be participating in a five day trek across the highlands of Iceland to raise vital funds for St. Andrew’s Hospice in Lanarkshire. The trek will involve eight and nine hour days climbing through lava fields, river crossings and wading through ice cold streams.
As part of his fundraising efforts, Mr Russell has organised a raffle which will be drawn in the school on 9th June. Tickets cost £5 and the excellent prizes on offer include an overnight stay for two at the Doubletree Hilton in Glasgow; signed football shirts; a service and MOT up to the value of £100; and many more. Parents and carers can also support this cause and a letter has been sent home with pupils regarding this (click below).

A Fond Farewell…
Study leave for our senior students started recently and we said a fond farewell to our S6 and some other senior pupils. The “leavers” enjoyed assemblies with the Headteacher and Depute Heads and were treated to a lunchtime buffet. We would like to wish them luck in their upcoming exams and assessments and all the best for the future.
S4 Achieve Bookbugs
The Scottish Book Trust’s Bookbug gifts book bags to every child in Scotland and runs free song & rhymes sessions for families with babies and young children. Last week was Bookbug Week and special events took place all over the country.
The theme this year was Bookbug’s Big Giggle and our S4 Achieve Group joined in the fun by reading to the Nursery children at Shotts Family Learning Centre. We very much promote reading for pleasure at Calderhead High School and it was great to see the Nursery children enjoying the stories.
Drumming Champion
Congratulations to talented S2 pupil, Mackenzie, who recently won the U17 West of Scotland Solo Drumming competition at the weekend.
The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association is the heart and home of Pipe Bands world wide and the recognised Centre of Excellence for the promotion and development of Pipe Band Music internationally.
Sporting Successes
Rugby Success S2 pupil, Angus, and S1 pupil, Douglas, played for the winning Barbarians rugby team at a NLC rugby festival on Friday, 21 April.
The Barbarians is a mixed team of pupils from Clyde Valley , Coltness and Calderhead High Schools who train together every week.
Orienteering Success
Well done to Jordan in S2, who won his race at an Orienteering event at Polkemmet Country Park during the Easter holidays.
Jordan is a keen runner and won first place in the Under 14 male category. He was happy to note that the weather conditions were rather better than the time he competed.
Dance Success
S6 pupil, Ewan, is studying Higher Dance at Bellshill Academy. He was part of the Bellshill Academy team that won the NLC contemporary dance competition at Greenfaulds High School recently. Their dance was about raising awareness for cancer research and you can see a video extract on the school twitter account. Congratulations, Ewan.
S6 Hoodies
We usually insist that our pupils wear blazers with their school uniforms but pupils in S6 were given special dispensation to wear their new ‘Leavers’ hoodies instead this week. The hoodies have the names of all the S6 pupils emblazoned on the back and will be a great memento for the pupils.
Charity Bake Sale
Carys in S6 has organised a “bake it” coffee afternoon to raise funds for cancer research on Friday, 21st April 2017.
The event will take place at lunchtime in the Assembly Hall and tickets cost £1.50.
Come and enjoy some excellent cakes and coffee.
