Senior pupils helped our NLActive Schools Co-ordinator, Jordann Cunningham, host a Sports Fayre Assembly and pupils had the opportunity to sign up for some of the many sports clubs at the school. Literacy Survey
Literacy is about learning to read and write accurately, being able to listen carefully and talk clearly about ideas. At Calderhead High School, we are committed to improving literacy across the school. Careers News – College Applications
Interested in going to College? Here are the dates applications open for the following Colleges for January 2018 starts:
- City of Glasgow College – opens on 11th October
- West College Scotland (Clydebank) – NC Computing with Digital Media: Level 5 – applications for this have just opened this and other courses should appear this month.
- New College Lanarkshire – will open at then end of October
- West Lothian College – courses will be live after the October break but they have pathways courses just now for care related courses
- Glasgow Kelvin – November or December

Sylvia is based in the school Library every Tuesday, Thursday and alternate Friday and pupils can request to meet with her through pupil support or by asking her for an appointment.
A careers interview is a confidential one to one discussion which helps pupils develop career management skills and make well informed decisions about their career pathways in the future.
Drop in Career Clinic
This is held every Thursday during lunch break and offers all pupils the chance to have career-related questions answered.

School Calendar
S1 parent night will take place tonight (12th October) and pupil photos will be taken tomorrow.
The school will be on holiday next week and we look forward to seeing everyone again on 23rd October 2017 at 8.55am.

MacMillan Coffee Morning
S6 pupils organised a coffee morning on 21st September 2017 to raise funds for MacMillan Cancer Support. S6 pupils and staff were treated to an array of delicious cakes and biscuits at interval and participated in a raffle, and raised a fantastic £234.28 for the charity.
We would like to thank the Co-op who supported the coffee morning and to Mrs Alexander, who baked a beautiful cake for the event.
Art
S3 pupil, Jaydn McGowan, was awarded this month’s Artist of the Month with his excellent illustrations from the world of Harry Potter.
Careering Into Science
The Glasgow Science Centre visited the school last week to give a presentation and workshop to our S1 pupils. The presentation was called “Careering into Science” and talked about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers and how choosing to study Science can lead into these. The workshop was called “Bodyworks” and gave pupils a chance to get hands on in learning about how your body works really hard every second of every day to keep you alive and how to help your body by keeping fit and healthy.
NLC Encounters Festival
North Lanarkshire’s Encounters Festival, running throughout October, offers the chance to experience something new in arts, literature and music this Autumn.
Take part in craft and creative workshops, get creative with performing & visual arts, spark your interest at author visits and talks, join the fun at museum events, focus on families’ days, Mushaira, and much more…

Annie the Musical
The Music Department accompanied pupils to see the Shine Company’s production of ‘Annie’ at Motherwell Concert Hall recently.
Set in 1930s New York during The Great Depression, brave young Annie is forced to live a life of misery at Miss Hannigan’s orphanage. Her luck soon changes when she’s chosen to spend a fairytale Christmas with famous billionaire, Oliver Warbucks. Meanwhile, spiteful Miss Hannigan has other ideas and hatches a plan to spoil Annie’s search for her true family…
Pupils and staff greatly enjoyed the show.
Kickstart Theatre Company
Kickstart Theatre Company visited the school recently and performed a smoking-prevention play for our S1 pupils. The performance discussed the dangers of smoking and encouraged them to make sensible decisions.
