Good luck to Mr Reilly’s S3 history pupils who have entered Poppy Scotland’s ‘Letters Home’ competition. This competition commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and pupils were asked to write a letter home as though they were soldiers fighting at the front. They were encouraged to think about sharing their experiences, emotions and describing the environment they were in, as well as the impact of their words on the letter’s recipient.
There have been lots of fun events already taking place in school to help raise funds for Children in Need.
Senior boys bravely agreed to get their legs waxed for Children in Need after school in the Hair and Beauty suite.
Senior pupils sold raffle tickets and persuaded pupils and staff to ‘Guess the Bear’s Birthday’.
There will be a non-uniform day tomorrow and we’re all looking forward to seeing our talented staff and pupils taking part in the school show tomorrow afternoon.
Shotts will celebrate Christmas in style this year with the first ever Christmas Lights Switch On on Saturday 19th November from 3.30pm until 4.30pm in the car park of Shotts Health Centre.
Get your dancing shoes on and join Santa as he does the Slosh across North Lanarkshire to raise awareness of the British Transplant Games coming to North Lanarkshire next year.
There will be a variety of local entertainment for you to enjoy before the all important Christmas Lights Switch On, as well as a chance to see Santa and post your letter to him.
Congratulations to our School Captain, Andrew Lynch, who has been named Transitions 20/40 student of the month by the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
This is the second year that Andrew has participated in the Transitions 20/40 initiative in Production as a Lighting Designer/Technician. Andrew advises that; “The best thing about production is being able to be part of the team that creates the show and makes the magic on stage really happen. You are able to do much that can make the stage look really effective with just simple equipment.”
Andrew frequently puts his skills and knowledge to use in school shows and assemblies and we greatly appreciate his input,

P7 pupils and their parents and carers are invited to attend an Open Evening at the school on Tuesday, 22 November 2016 from 5.30pm to 8pm. The evening will start with a meeting in the Assembly Hall where pupils, parents and carers can meet the Head Teacher and Depute Head Teacher.
From 6pm on there will be an opportunity to tour the school, meet staff and see what happens in departments. Our S1 pupils will act as tour guides for the evening and will be happy to share their experiences of life at Calderhead High School. Letters have been issued to P7 pupils but if you would like any more information, please do not hesitate to contact the school or visit the school website.
S3 pupils will be organising a foodbank collection to help out and support the local Trussell Trust Foodbank in Airdrie.
S3 appreciate that some are less fortunate than others and want to give a helping hand by donating food. Any donations would be greatly appreciated and will go to a good cause.
Donations will be taken from 22 November to 13 December 2016.
Donated food can be placed in one of four boxes situated under each House name in the social area of the school. This will also be a House competition and House points will be awarded to the House which donates the most food.
There will also be a collection point at the Christmas Fare on Saturday, 26 November and we would ask anyone who is coming along to please bring one or two items to donate to the foodbank.
Suggested donations:
• Biscuits
• Cereal
• Pasta sauce
• Tea / coffee
• Tinned beans, fruit, meat, soup, and vegetables.
Congratulations to S1 pupil, Emma Louise Pringle, who won Gold at the Scottish Judo Championships at Ravenscraig this weekend.
Good luck in the British Championships in 3 weeks time.
Mrs Scognamiglio’s S3 Home Economics Class took part in a Halloween cake competition on Friday 28th October 2016.
The competition was judged by the Headteacher, Mr Robertson and Miss Wilson, Faculty Head, who decided that Hayleigh’s cake was the ‘most Halloween’. Well done Hayleigh!
There are pictures of all the cakes on our Image Gallery.
Senior pupils in the Personal Development class are busy organising the school’s annual Christmas Fayre, which will take place on 26 November 2016 from 1pm to 3pm.
There will be a number of different stalls with something for everyone as well as a coffee shop with delicious cakes and beverages. You can also meet Santa Claus in his Frozen themed grotto. Entertainment will be provided by the excellent Calderhead High School choir, who will be singing Christmas songs.
