“We had a glimpse of what happens in the heart of a star”
Twenty S4-S6 Chemistry and Physics pupils recently made the trip to Geneva for a tour of European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). After a quick train and tram journey from the airport, the pupils dropped their luggage at the hostel before enjoying ice cream in the glorious sunshine beside Lake Geneva.
The group took advantage of the weather by exploring the sights around the city and took a water taxi across the lake to see the Jet d’Eau.
There was an early start on Tuesday as the pupils made their way to CERN for a lecture by Mike Tyrell who discussed results from the various detectors at Large Hadron Collider and the benefits that the program has brought to society.
They then made the short trip over the border to France where they were given a tour of the testing facility and central control centre. Everyone enjoyed a well earned lunch with the scientists at the the CERN restaurant before taking in the Microcosm and Globe of Innovation and Science exhibitions. There was just enough time to take in the Natural History museum the following day before making their way back to the airport to catch the flight home.
Mr Leitch and our four seniors, Elizabeth Gentleman, Morgan Lynch, Heather McCallum and Kate Sutherland will be departing for their trip to Malawi on Tuesday.
First Aid Supplies
They have a very busy itinerary, which includes visiting projects and schools, as well as gardening and renovation work.
Thank you to everyone who donated the first aid and medical supplies to take to Malawi.
Malawi Knitting
Mrs Crosbie’s knitting group also created and donated some wonderful garments. We look forward to hearing from our intrepid travellers when they return.
S2 pupils enjoyed some glorious sunshine on their reward day trip to M&Ds funfair in Strathclyde Park on Thursday, 24th May 2018. Everyone had a fantastic time and fortunately Mrs Buchanan and Ms Kilpatrick had plenty of spare sunscreen!
Mr Leitch and four senior pupils (Morgan Lynch, Heather McCallum, Kate Sutherland and Elizabeth Gentleman) will be flying out to Malawi next week and are still looking for donations of basic first aid items such as plasters, bandages, antiseptic wipes and sprays, anti bacterial hand gel and so on for first aid kits which can then be distributed to the Girls Go For Health coordinator there.
These items should be brought into the school by 1 June and we are very grateful for any donations.
On Wednesday, 23rd May, our S1 pupils participated in the Tinto Hill Challenge.
This Challenge is open to Lanarkshire schools who want to support St Andrew’s Hospice. The Hospice is based in Airdrie and Calderhead High School regularly carries out fundraising activities to support them.
Our pupils enjoyed the walk up Tinto Hill in glorious sunshine and were delighted to complete the challenge.

S3 pupil, Mackenzie, recently won an award in the Under 17s category at the recent Glasgow and West of Scotland Branch of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association drumming competition held at Coatbridge High School. Well done, Mackenzie!
Mr Leitch and four senior pupils (Morgan Lynch, Heather McCallum, Kate Sutherland and Elizabeth Gentleman) are due to undertake a visit to Malawi on 5 June 2018. They have a couple of extra suitcases booked on the flight so they can take some additional first aid supplies.
Mr Leitch plans to take basic first aid items such as plasters, bandages, antiseptic wipes and sprays, anti bacterial hand gel and so on for first aid kits which can then be distributed to the Girls Go For Health coordinator.
We’re looking for donations of items for the kits and would ask pupils to donate as much as possible by  1st June at the latest.

It is with great sadness that today we mark the loss of Mr Roy Burgess who passed away last night surrounded by his well loved family and friends.
Mr Burgess worked at Calderhead High School for almost 40 years first as Principal Teacher of Chemistry, then as Assistant Head Teacher before taking up the post of Depute Head Teacher of Senior school.
For those of us lucky enough to have known and worked with him he will be remembered as being a great Chemist, an outstanding Teacher, a loyal friend and mentor. A raconteur, a fisherman and above all else a true gentleman.
For the many pupils fortunate enough to have been guided under his tutelage he will be remembered with great fondness for his compassion, his sense of humour, his loyalty and his unfaltering commitment to every pupil at Calderhead High School.
On behalf of all pupils and collegues past and present of Calderhead High School we would like to express our sincere sympathy to Janette, Scott, Linzi and Ivy.
S3 pupils participated in an Easter cake competition earlier on 19th April and produced some beautiful cakes. The competition was judged by Stephanie Roth, Head of Department at Bells Food Group and our headteacher, Mr Robertson. The standard of cakes was extremely high and it was very difficult to select the prize winners.

Calderhead High School hosted the Wishaw and Shotts Youth Forum’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Conference on 20 March. The Pupil Council from Calderhead and the other three cluster High School Pupil Councils heard inspirational speeches from Kira Melville from Clyde Valley High School, and adventurer and author, Paula McGuire, as well as attending workshops with Chris’s House, Landed, NL Active Schools and the Scottish Youth Parliament. The Wishaw and Shotts Youth Forum is one of six local youth forums who represent young people, organise events and fight for issues that affect them.
