Editing with Sauerbraten

Cube 2: Sauerbraten is a free multiplayer & singleplayer first person shooter, the successor of the Cube FPS.

Much like the original Cube, the aim of this game is fun, old school deathmatch gameplay and also to allow map/geometry editing to be done cooperatively in-game.

This article is based on the editing section of the Sauerbraten website. I must admit I approached this with some dread after poor editing experiences with quite a few FPS I was less than convinced that an open source game could get it right, boy was I wrong. Here are the basic steps for creating a map from scratch

  • Load Sauerbraten
  • Load a map, any map will do.
  • press “e”

Editing in Sauerbraten is done live on the map, it works with a series of cubes than can be made larger or smaller or deformed.

  • Scroll wheel down – create a cube off of that face
  • Scroll wheel up – destroy a cude
  • Spacebar – unselect currently selected area
  • G – Change the size of the “selection cube”
  • Y – Change the texture of the current selection
  • Middle mouse button – Deform a corner when used with scroll wheel
  • F – Deform a face, useful for making platforms

To create a new map go to the editor then press “t” and enter /newmap 7

To save a map go to the editor then press “t” and enter /savemap mapname

I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
