Literacy & English April/May 2018

We are becoming aware of words. We know that you can say words, read words and write words.

Ewan “You write them on the paper”

Olivia “You find them in our name. You can read them in homework in Primary One.”

Lawson “On paper. With no numbers on it. In those books.”

Some of our children are becoming aware of the sounds used to make words.

Some of our Pre-School children made their own books. They worked with a partner to problem solve, match words, predict what the next word might be – they used their pictures as a clue.  A few ch’n were able to touch one word at a time when “reading” their story.

Jack and the Beanstalk

We read ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’.  Some strange things have been happening in or nursery.

First we found golden eggs in strange places.

We were curious to find out more … a letter arrived from the Giant.  He asked us if we could help him to make his home more secure.

We made a plan.

We have been very creative. We worked together to construct a safe home for the Giant.

The children chose to use a challenge card to build a castle. They were able to persevere for a considerable time to measure, predict, solve problems, match shapes, compare size and balance objects. They then added extra security measures of their own…

“Bananas to make it slippy” Alexander

“Security cameras”  Rosie

“A guard with a gun … a big huge wall”  Lawson

“Ice-cream ti make it slippy”  Ewan

“Lasers, they blind the bad guys in the eyes”  Lawson

The children returned to – and added to- their project every day for over a week!
