Welcome to Primary 6 and Mrs Collins and Mrs Ward. This term we are learning about our class community and Meet the Greeks.
Primary 6’s first term began with pupils getting to know each other and their school community. They have settled well to having two teachers, Mrs Hemmings, Monday and Tuesday and Mrs Gray, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
In the curriculum, for language pupils have covered Report Writing, learning to write newspaper reports, diary extracts and letters based around their theme of Mary queen of Scots.
In Maths we have focused on Place Value, addition, subtraction, and multiplication, as well as 2D and 3D shape where they made nets and skeletons of shapes. The children also have a personal times table challenge each week to encourage them to learn their tables and table facts.
For P.E. with the class teacher, the children were involved in learning Kwik Cricket skills and with the P.E. Specialist, Mr Custodio they were developing rugby skills and how to improve their fitness. As a nationwide initiative, the children have been taking part in the Daily Dash and have shown great improvement in their stamina and fitness.
The children have enjoyed learning about Mary Queen of Scots through their theme, looking at her early life in France and continuing into her later life and imprisonment, culminating in a mock trial which included dressing up in period costume. Much of their learning focused on them developing their research skills. Some high points where making a Tudor Rose and Tudor Houses and also long-stitched tapestry.
Along with P6A, the children presented the school Harvest Festival assembly in front of family and visitors from the local community. They then played host to them in their classroom and afterwards in the hall for refreshments.
Our new system of rewards Dojo is proving popular with the pupils and parents who are able to follow their child’s progress in class.
We have started the term and begun learning about decimals in Numeracy. So far we have completed addition and subtraction an are currently doing multiplication.
In Literacy, we are doing narrative writing. first we have looked at writing a simple plot. From that we have developed our writing to plan and write the setting to a story and currently we are learning how to create a character focusing on our planning.
Our theme this term is Eco Machines which covers a lot of areas concentrating on the environment. We have started the theme by looking at fossil fuels and then seeing what environmentally friendly way we can get our energy from. This involves looking at wind, water and the sun.
This term for our theme, we have been learning about Space, which included finding out about the planets. We have made poems to remind us of the order they appear in space. For a craft activity we made spaceships out of plastic lids(from Costa) and then hung them in a diorama painted to look like space. We wrote letters to Costa to thank them for the plastic lids.
In Maths we worked on Time, including calendars and timetables. We carried out group activities where we timed ourselves doing the different tasks, working in seconds. We also covered angles and compass direction and carried out activities outside using compasses to make routes which included angles.
We were lucky enough to have Stu Rolfe come and talk to us about radio
and radar waves during STEM week. He demonstrated how radio and radar waves work using a photo of a typhoon and ping pong balls! We found this a really interesting talk and had a lot of fun with string telephones and passing messages.
This term our Context for Learning was Thrills and Spills. We have investigated forces in theme parks, particularly roller coasters, ferris wheels and loop the loops. We used this understanding to build our own marble roller coasters from junk. These were very successful, a lot of fun and allowed pupils to develop their knowledge of potential and kinetic energy. We also debated whether a theme park should be built in Lossiemouth with Miss Noel. Stem challenges were a big part of our term, and the pupils worked really hard to develop their growth mindset, perseverance and resilience. The pupils were very busy during STEM week with our visits to Morayvia and the Moray Science Fair, and presentations from the RAF about hydraulics, radio and radar waves, which was a lot of fun! Our team were really successful at the SCDI STEM club festival in Inverness, where we won the Regional Club of the year for the North East. Our lollypop bridge managed to hold 15 water bottles – which was a great achievement!
