P5/6A Home School Learning 11 May – Week 5

P5/6A W/C 11.05.2020

I would like to start by saying well done on your activities from last week. Great effort on Sumdog and I got to read some brilliant poems. I am also enjoying seeing the other areas that you are researching and investigating and the other fun things that you are busy enjoying!

Staying with positive news…this is a 3-day school week for you! So again, I have reduced your suggested activities this week but have put an important task in there! Primary 5 and Primary 6, you will have different activities this week for literacy & ICT, but you know that you can always have a go at the other activity too.

Some information for you – Heinemann Active Learn is making some updates this week to their login page. This update means that on/after the 16th May you will need to re-enter your usernames and passwords again when you first login after this date. If you have your details saved but need to take a note of them you can click “Show” on the Sign In/Login page. However, if it is easier, you can always just ask me for your details.

On Tuesday, 12th May at 2pm, I invite you to join another Team meeting/webinar. We can maybe mix up what we do in some future meetings but thought that it would be nice to just share some news and stories again this week. The meetings will not be at the same time every week as I want to be flexible to allow for things like music lessons, clubs, other meetings, and just the busy lives that people still have. The invite and joining instructions are on our Team page. I’m looking forward to hearing from you, hopefully, you will manage to join.

Please remember that the Home Learning Packs are still on our main class page should you be looking for other ideas or websites to use and visit.

Maths

This week I have kept on the theme of shape for maths. I have some shape starters for you to try and then I have a variety of games for you to enjoy.

Can you answer these shape questions correctly?  Shape Word Clues

Can you complete these shape crosswords?  2D Shape Crossword   3D Shape Crossword

In some of these games, the aim is to create images. It would be great if you manage to capture some of your finished pieces in a photo to share or some action shots of you playing a game would be good too.

Pattern Blocks – Have fun making your own shapes, tessellating patterns, or see if you can complete the pattern puzzles. https://www.coolmath4kids.com/manipulatives/pattern-blocks

Tangram Builder – Can you complete these tricky Tangram puzzles? https://mathigon.org/tangram

Literacy and ICT

Primary 6

So, the time has come to think ahead to Primary 7.  Argh, I hear you say! No need to panic though, this is exciting times…it is time to do your Buddy Application! As Mrs Grimson would normally come and visit you in class to explain and discuss the role of a Buddy, she and the other Primary 1 teachers have very kindly made a video for you to watch instead. I have uploaded the video onto Teams. Please take the time to watch the video and if you have any questions, remember that you can ask me on Teams or through Glow email. I have attached the Buddy Role Outline; this is a snapshot of what Mrs Grimson explains in the video for you to refer to. I am also attaching the Buddy Application Form. This is your main task for the week. In fact, I am giving you 2 WEEKS to complete this as it is important that you get this information to me! Mrs Grimson also explains about a video that we would love for you to make. The video is for your Buddy (once they are allocated) however, I know that some of you really enjoy creating PowerPoints so this could be another way for you to share and showcase information about yourself with your Buddy. The instructions for creating a video are below.

To recap – Please watch the video (on Teams) from Mrs Grimson and carefully read over the Buddy Role Outline. It is important that you complete your application and send it back to me (either to my Glow email or save it in your folder on Teams) by 22nd May. It is your choice if you make a video with you starring in it, a video with just pictures and words or a PowerPoint. I cannot wait to see what you come up with. This is such a brilliant opportunity Primary 6; I really hope that you are excited and will look forward to becoming a Buddy.   Buddy Role Outline   Buddy Application 2020   Buddy Introduction Movie Instructions

Primary 5

I really think that you will enjoy what I have looked out for you this week…the Story Cubes. I have rolled the dice and taken photos for you to choose from. There are 3 options, but you only need to choose one. I just wanted you to have a choice. You are going to take on the role of ‘storyteller’. It is a good idea to begin with “Once Upon a Time” then tell a story that links together all 9 images. Start with the first image to grab your attention. Use three cubes for the beginning, three for the middle and three for the end of the story. There are no wrong answers with this activity, it is all about using your imagination and being creative! Once you know your story there are different things that you could do. You could write it down. You might want to retell your story to a sibling, parent or phone another relative to share it with them. You might want to make a video using your story. If you do, you could try using ‘Sock Puppet’ at home like we have done in class. Sock Puppet app allows you to create a setting and use characters to tell your story. Whatever option you choose, I hope that you have fun and enjoy this activity.  Story Cube Images

Health and Wellbeing

Empathy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Itp21tly8nM

This week is all about Primary 6 being a P7 buddy and I have linked the Health and Well-being into this. In order to be a good buddy/friend, you will need to have ‘empathy’. This will enable you to understand how someone else may be feeling.

Watch the YouTube clip to find out exactly what empathy is, and how it can help you be a better friend and buddy!

Think back to when you were a little P1 (all those years ago!) then try and make a list of some of the feelings that a Primary 1 may have and why. Put them into a sentence and underline the key emotion. Aim for 5-8 sentences.

eg: A Primary 1 might feel confused because they might not know where the toilets are. They may feel sad because they miss their parents.

Music

Here is the next recorder challenge from Mrs Allan. Remember that you can try this on any instrument that you have at home. This week’s challenge is a traditional Scottish song…Over the Sea to Skye. The Skye Boat song describes how Bonnie Prince Charlie, disguised as an Irish woman, was rowed over the Minch (a stretch of water in North -West Highlands) to the Island of Skye to hide from the British soldiers. Here are the instructions, lyrics, and music.  Recorder Challenge 4   Over the Sea to Skye

Have a great week and stay safe!
