Attached is the termly overview and homework letter for P7. It details some of the topics and themes we aim to cover this term and ways you can help at home. This was handed out at ‘meet the teacher’.

We have now come to the end of our rainforest topic. We learned lots about the rainforest including the many animals and tribes which live there. We were shocked to hear about the effects of deforestation and wrote persuasive reports to help stop it. We built a 3D rainforest in our classroom and did some lovely art work linked to the topic. Here are some examples:

In Maths we have been learning about time. We have learned how to convert time, measure time to 100^th of a second, read and interpret timetables and plan journeys. We really enjoyed learning about word time, where we had to find out the time in our dream destinations! When we return after the Easter Break we will be learning how to calculate speed, distance and time.

In Health and Wellbeing we have started to learn about Drugs. We have been discussing what drugs are and risks that we find in everyday life. We know that all risk is not bad. We will go on to look at different types of drugs and how they can affect decision making.

Just before the end of term, we attended The Risk Factory in Edinburgh. We really enjoyed this trip where we got to experience lots of scenarios such as road safety, risks in the home and anti-social behaviour. It was very interesting listening to the responses of our classmates and getting advice from experts.

We now move on to term 4. It promises to be a very exciting term for us with school camp, High School transition, a leavers show and graduation. Tissues at the ready!

We began this term by reflecting on last year and created wishing wands with our hopes for the year ahead. We also set new targets linked to our learning,  which we are constantly reviewing. We have been using our Learning Pit before, during and after our learning and it is helping us to use a variety of ‘stuck strategies’.

This term our topic is the rainforest. We have been learning about where rainforests are in the world, the difference between temperate and tropical rainforests and we have started to learn about the layers of the rainforest. We have also learned about some rainforest animals such as the jaguar and the Capuchin monkey. We are also starting to make a 3D rainforset in our classroom.

In Numeracy we have been learning to use the jump strategy with adding and subtracting. We have also been learning about measure. Tomorrow we will be finishing our measure topic by learning about volume.

In P.E we have been doing athletics and on Monday we had a competition. 20 of our primary sevens from both classes went along and took part. The events included things such as: running, vertical jump, speed bounce, chest push, long jump, obstacle race and triple jump (Natasha in P7a set a new Midlothian record!!). Hawthornden WON the tournament on the day and came second overall in Midlothian.

This term Primary 7 have been learning about World War II. We have found out about the countries involved, significant people, evacuees, rationing, The Blitz and concentration camps. Many of us enjoyed making Carrot Cookies by following a war time recipe. We thought they would taste disgusting but they were very tasty! We held a showcase afternoon for our parents to share all of our work. They enjoyed our singing and said that we were very confident when talking about our learning. We also read the book ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’. It was an engaging story with a very sad and shocking ending! To complete our topic Mr Kearsley came in to talk about Auschwitz-Birkenau. We were shocked and amazed to hear about some of the things that happened.

We have really enjoyed this topic, including lots of personal research at home.

16 primary 7 pupils are standing for election as house captain. This week they have been busy working in their campaign teams to prepare for the election assembly on Friday. They have been creating speeches, posters, rosettes and powerpoints to promote themselves and explain why they think they should be elected and what they can help do for the school. They will present their speeches on Friday and afterwards, the whole school will get a chance to vote for a captain for their house.
